Cruz Azul vs América – Jornada 13 Recap & Highlights

In the Apertura 2019 edition of the Clásico Joven, Cruz Azul earned a historic 5-2 victory against América. The result snaps a seven-game winless streak for La Máquina, while the Águilas saw their four-game unbeaten streak halted.

Cruz Azul started the game off well with a goal in the 15th minute. Julio César Domínguez headed home a corner kick to make it 1-0 for La Máquina – suffering a painful clash of heads with defender Bruno Valdez in the process.

América responded well, though, and Guido Rodríguez tied the game in the 37th minute with his shot from outside the box. Then, while Cruz Azul was looking to regroup, América took the lead.

In the 40th minute, Henry Martín scored from outside the box to make it 1-2 for the Águilas going into halftime.

The tone of the game changed again in the 51st minute, though, when Roger Martínez was sent off for an elbow on Rafael Baca. With América down to 10 players, Cruz Azul looked to retake the initiative.

They did so quickly, with Pablo Aguilar heading home a corner kick to tie the game 2-2 in the 53rd minute.

Then, in the 58th, another set piece put La Máquina back in front as Roberto Alvarado finished off a free kick at the far post to make it 3-2 for Cruz Azul.

After that, it was all Cruz Azul. Four minutes later, Orbelín Pineda added an insurance goal as he took the ball into the box, cut past his defender, and beat Memo Ochoa to make it 4-2 in the 62nd minute.

The exclamation point came in the 75th, when Jonathan Rodríguez took advantage of some defensive confusion to latch on to a loose ball, take it into the box, and chip Ochoa to give Cruz Azul the definitive 5-2 lead.

A frustrated Miguel Herrera got himself ejected from the sidelines in the 82nd minute as Cruz Azul cruised to victory.

With the 5-2 win, Cruz Azul reaches 16 points while América still has 21.
