Tigres were looking to build on last weekend’s rivalry win and get back to winning ways at home, while Santos wanted to reclaim first place in the table after Necaxa’s victory last night. It was the hosts who started off stronger, and it didn’t take long for Tigres to take the lead.
In the 10th minute, Luis Rodríguez received the ball on the right and sent a low cross in for Lucas Zelarayán, who got there ahead of the defense to make it 1-0 for the universitarios.
Tigres continued to press and in the 25th minute, “Chaka” Rodríguez got another assist as he sent a cross to the far post for André-Pierre Gignac, who stooped to head it home and make it 2-0 for the hosts.
Santos looked for a response, but Tigres controlled possession. Minutes into the second half, Gignac won a penalty kick after his shot hit the arm of Carlos Orrantia in the box. The Frenchman stepped up to take the PK himself and he roofed it to complete his brace and make it 3-0 in the 48th minute.
In the 60th, Santos was able to clear their lines and after a series of saves, blocks, and rebounds, Zelarayán put the ball away to give Tigres the definitive 4-0 lead.
With the 4-0 win, Tigres reach 20 points while Santos still has 23.
