Puebla took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Toluca scored late to earn a 1-1 draw. The result keeps the Diablos Rojos winless in two but unbeaten in three, while La Franja saw a two-game winning streak halted but also remain unbeaten in three.
The visitors looked the more dangerous side from the beginning, and in the 9th minute they came within inches of taking the lead when Alan Acosta hit the crossbar. Toluca had one notable chance through Felipe Pardo, which was saved well by Nikolás Vikonis, but the majority of play went Puebla’s way in the first half.
In the 32nd minute, the referee went to VAR to see if Toluca should get a penalty after Pardo went down in the box under pressure from Néstor Vidrio, but in the end nothing was given.
Then, minutes into the second half, Puebla took the lead. In the 49th minute, Brayan Angulo brought the ball to the end line and cut it back towards the far post, where Acosta finished it off to make it 0-1 for the visitors.
They had chances to add to their lead, but they couldn’t beat Alfredo Talavera a second time. The wasted opportunities came back to haunt them in the 85th minute, when Jonathan Maidana headed home the equalizer to make it 1-1.
Each team had one last notable chance to claim the lead – Federico Mancuello for Toluca and Christian Marrugo for Puebla – but in the end, they had to settle for a share of the spoils.
With the 1-1 draw, Toluca and Puebla both reach 13 points.
