Tijuana vs Veracruz – Jornada 15 Recap & Highlights

Tijuana kept themselves in the playoff fight with a 2-0 win against Veracruz. The result snaps a two-game winless streak for the Xolos, while the Tiburones Rojos’ own record-setting winless streak grew to 41 games.

The hosts took control of the game early, with Camilo Sanvezzo and Ariel Nahuelpán looking particularly dangerous in the attack. Sebastián Jurado made a number of saves to keep Veracruz in the game, while the Tiburones Rojos’ defense once again looked out of sorts.

It seemed like just a matter of time before Tijuana took the lead, and in the second half they got a golden opportunity to do just that after Luis Lozoya was called for a foul on Nahuelpán in the box. Leonel Miranda stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick, and he converted it to put the Xolos up 1-0 in the 56th minute.

Veracruz pushed forward in search of an equalizer, and it seemed like they should have a penalty of their own when Gabriel Peñalba was pushed while trying to score a header and then brought down by Jordan Silva when he tried to get the rebound. But nothing was called and no VAR review of the play took place, and the game continued with Veracruz still down 1-0.

Then, in the 75th minute, Tijuana put the game away. Nahuelpán was played into the box and sent his low shot through the legs of the onrushing Jurado to make it 2-0 for the hosts.

With the 2-0 win, Tijuana reaches 21 points while Veracruz still has four.
