Cruz Azul took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Tigres UANL scored in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw. The result ends the universitarios’ three-game winning streak but keeps them unbeaten in four, while La Máquina remains winless in two.
The game started off well for the visitors, who took the lead in the 18th minute. Jonathan Rodríguez received the ball at the top of the box, turned, and shot past Nahuel Guzmán to make it 0-1 for Cruz Azul.
Tigres pushed forward in search of a response, but Cruz Azul stood firm defensively and created dangerous chances of their own on the counterattack.
In the 54th minute, Tigres had a good opportunity after Cruz Azul lost the ball trying to play out of the back, but André-Pierre Gignac couldn’t quite make the necessary contact and the chance went begging.
Then, in the 64th, Cruz Azul had a great chance to add an insurance goal after a defensive error. Hugo Ayala allowed a long ball to bounce past him, unaware that Rodríguez was right behind him; but the defender got back to clear the shot off the line with Guzmán beaten, and the game remained 0-1.
Soon after that, Rodríguez hit the woodwork. It looked more likely that Cruz Azul would find a second than Tigres would find an equalizer, but in stoppage time André-Pierre Gignac got on the end of a long throw-in, lifted the ball over Pablo Aguilar, and then fired past Jesús Corona to make it 1-1 in the 91st minute.
With the 1-1 draw, Tigres reach 24 points while Cruz Azul still has 17.
