Santos Laguna reclaimed first place in the table with a 1-0 victory against Querétaro. The result keeps the Guerreros unbeaten at home this season and unbeaten in three overall, while the Gallos Blancos saw their three-game winning streak halted.
With the two teams knowing the winner would jump over Necaxa – who has a bye this week – into first place, the game started at a good rhythm, with free-flowing play and chances at both ends. Querétaro had the first chance in just the 2nd minute, but Jesús Escoboza’s shot to the far post went just wide.
Then, in the 16th minute, Mateus Doria gave Santos the lead with a long-distance shot that curved past the diving Gil Alcalá to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
They could have added to their lead in the 27th minute when Julio César Furch had a good opportunity, but that time Alcalá was able to make the save.
The second half was hard-fought, but with fewer chances. The game bogged down in midfield for long stretches, but what chances there were went Santos Laguna’s way. The Laguneros could have added an insurance goal a time or two, but Alcalá continued to deny them. Most notably, he made a double save in the 71st minute, stopping first a header by Furch and then the follow-up attempt by Eryc Castillo.
Querétaro, meanwhile, managed just one chance of note in the second stanza, which came via Enrique Triverio in the 87th minute, but Jonathan Orozco was able to make the save and preserve the lead for Santos.
With the 1-0 win, Santos reaches 30 points while Querétaro still has 27.
