CONCACAF Nations League: Panama vs Mexico – Recap & Highlights

CONCACAF Nations League logoMexico remained perfect in the group stage of the 2019 CONCACAF Nations League with a 0-3 away win against Panama. The result guarantees a spot for El Tri in the tournament semifinals.

Mexico had an early scare when Alberto Quintero got free on the right and sent a dangerous low cross in for Gabriel Torres, but Memo Ochoa as able to make the save to keep it 0-0 in the 4th minute. Torres felt he was fouled by César Montes on the play, but the referee was content to wave play on and there is no VAR in the Nations League.

Three minutes later, Mexico took the lead. Rodolfo Pizarro drove towards the box, suffered a foul, recovered the ball, and played in Roberto Alvarado, who in turn fed Raúl Jiménez, who made it 0-1 for the visitors.

The goal filled El Tri with confidence, and they soon had chances to add to their lead, with both Alvarado and Jiménez looking dangerous. José Calderón made a few saves to keep Panama in the game, and the hosts went into halftime with just the one-goal deficit.

They were not able to dig themselves out of the hole in the second half, though, and instead Mexico added to their lead. In the 70th minute, Edson Álvarez added the insurance goal when he got the final touch to a loose ball in the box following a Mexico free kick.

Then, in the 84th minute, Mexico was awarded a penalty kick after Anibal Mello took down Uriel Antuna in the box. Jiménez stepped up to take the spot kick and he buried it to give El Tri the definitive 0-3 lead.

With the 0-3 win, Mexico reaches nine points while Panama still has three.
