Monterrey grabbed the last available playoff spot with a 2-0 victory against Atlas. The Rayados needed a win to guarantee their place in the postseason, and they got it, extending their unbeaten streak to five games in the process, while the Rojinegros saw their Apertura end with a four-game losing streak.
Monterrey came out attacking and their pressure soon paid off. In the 7th minute, Jesús Gallardo brought the ball to the end line before cutting it back to an unmarked Rogelio Funes Mori at the top of the box; his left-footed shot arced past the goalkeeper to give the Rayados the early 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, Monterrey earned a free kick in a dangerous spot, and Funes Mori jumped highest to head home the service and make it 2-0 in just the 11th minute.
There was no way back for Atlas after that; the early goals took the pressure off Monterrey, who easily controlled the run of play.
The visitors mustered a chance or two in the second half, but they didn’t come to anything. Then, late on, Mauricio Cuero was sent off for an elbow, leaving Atlas to finish the game with just 10 players.
With the 2-0 win, Monterrey reaches 27 points while Atlas still has 21.
