Pachuca earned a 2-0 victory against Pumas UNAM, but due to Monterrey’s victory earlier it was not enough to get the Tuzos into the playoffs. Pachuca ended their season with a three-game unbeaten streak, while the universitarios wrapped up their Apertura with a three-game winless streak.
Despite knowing they were out of the running for the Liguilla, Pachuca was determined to end the season on a positive note in front of their fans, and they came out attacking. Their pressure paid off in the 34th minute, when they took advantage of a defensive error to take the lead.
Pablo Jáquez tried to pass the ball back to Alfredo Saldívar, but the keeper wasn’t expecting it and Víctor Guzmán was able to grab the loose ball on the end line and cut it back to the top of the six-yard box for Roberto de la Rosa. The 19-year-old finished it off to make it 1-0 for Pachuca with his first professional goal.
De la Rosa finished off his brace in the second half. Rubens Sambueza was played in behind the defense; he took the ball to the end line and sent a cross in to the top of the six-yard box, where the young striker was waiting to make it 2-0.
Pumas was never able to muster much of a reaction, even though they had a sizable traveling contingent of fans in the stands attempting to cheer them on.
With the 2-0 win, Pachuca reaches 25 pointes while Pumas still have 23.
