In a game where both teams had the lead at one time or another, Toluca and Santos Laguna ultimately had to settle for a 2-2 draw. With the Laguneros already having locked up first place in the table, and with the Diablos Rojos long since out of playoff contention, there wasn’t much for either side to play for in this one.
Nevertheless, the game started off at a good pace and the visitors soon took the lead. In the 9th minute, Santos won a free kick just outside the box, and Diego Valdés sent it curving past Alfredo Talavera to make it 0-1 for the Laguneros.
Toluca responded quickly, though, and in the 15th minute they tied the game. Emmanuel Gigliotti headed home a cross from the right to make it 1-1.
Then, just before the half-hour mark, Toluca completed the comeback. William da Silva burst through the defense, ran the length of the half to go one-on-one with Carlos Acevedo, and buried his shot to give the Diablos the 2-1 lead.
The lead didn’t last long, though. In the 36th minute, Santos made it 2-2 as Edgar Games buried a rebound from the top of the box.
It looked like Santos would go on to take the lead in the second half, as Toluca went down to 10 men just a minute after the restart when Jonatan Maidana was sent off with his second yellow card of the afternoon. But despite their numerical advantage, the visitors were unable to find a winning goal, and the two teams ultimately settled for a share of the spoils.
With the 2-2 draw, Santos reaches 37 points while Toluca reaches 17.
