León took the lead but ultimately couldn’t hold it as Santos Laguna came from behind for a 3-2 victory in a game featuring three penalties and plenty of VAR controversy. The result gives the Laguneros their first win of the season, while León suffered their first loss of the Clausura 2020.
The visitors started the game off strongly and it didn’t take them long to take the lead. In the 10th minute, Ismael Sosa sent a cross to the far post and Jean Meneses was there to make it 0-1 for León.
León had the ball in the back of the net again, but the flag went up to deny Meneses his second of the night.
The visitors had the better of the run of play, but Santos began to look threatening toward the end of the half, even coming as close as hitting the crossbar in the 37th minute.
Then, moments after the second half began, Stiven Barreiro was called for a foul on Brian Lozano in the box and the hosts had the lifeline of a penalty kick. Lozano stepped up to take it himself, and he converted it to make it 1-1 in the 48th minute.
In the 56th minute, Lozano suffered another foul in the box – this one committed by Gil Burón – and after VAR review, the hosts were given another penalty. Diego Valdés took that one, but the result was the same: goal Santos.
That swung the momentum firmly in the Guerreros’ favor, and Santos looked comfortable with the 2-1 lead. But in the 81st minute, Mateus Doria fouled Jesús Godínez in the box, with VAR review confirming the penalty for León.
Ángel Mena stepped up and converted the PK to tie the game 2-2 in the 86th minute.
Santos appeared to have found an immediate response, but their would-be goal was disallowed for a foul in the build up. Nevertheless, moments after that, Octavio Rivero headed Santos back in front, with his 89th-minute goal giving the hosts the definitive 3-2 lead.
With the 3-2 win, Santos reaches three points while León still has three.
