Necaxa ultimately came out on top of this back-and-forth game, earning a 2-3 away win against Toluca. The result gets the Rayos off to a winning start in the Clausura 2020, while the Diablos Rojos suffered their first loss of the season.
The game started off nicely for the visitors, who were playing their first match of the season. In the 22nd minute, Kevin Mercado tried a shot on goal; Alfredo Talavera made the save, but gave up a rebound that Mauro Quiroga put away to make it 0-1 for Necaxa.
Toluca looked for a response and found one before halftime. In the 37th minute, Leo Fernández ran onto a loose ball just inside the box and beat Hugo González with a left-footed shot to make it 1-1.
Then, in the final moments of the half, the hosts completed the turnaround. Luis Hernández put Toluca 2-1 ahead when he finished off a corner kick with a diving header in the 45th minute.
But Necaxa pressed hard in the second half as they looked to salvage something from the game. Their persistence finally paid off in the 80th minute, when Alexis Doldán headed home a corner kick to tie the game 2-2.
Then, in the 88th minute, VAR review awarded a penalty to the visitors for a foul in the box. Mauro Quiroga stepped up to take the spot kick, and although Talavera made the stop, Quiroga was able to put the rebound away to turn the tables back in Necaxa’s favor: 2-3 in the 93rd minute.
With the 2-3 win, Necaxa reaches three points while Toluca still has three.
