Cruz Azul earned a comfortable 3-0 home victory against Santos Laguna in this Jornada 3 clash. The result gives La Máquina their first win of the Clausura 2020, while the Laguneros remain winless on the road.
Going into this one, Cruz Azul was the only team in Liga MX without a point earned this season. They came out attacking as they looked to change that, and they got their reward immediately. In just the second minute, Jonathan Rodríguez put Cruz Azul 1-0 up with his goal from just inside the box.
The early goal energized the hosts and they remained on the front foot for the rest of the half. Jonathan Orozco was kept busy in goal, and it was only his efforts that kept Cruz Azul from running up the score.
Santos had a chance or two of their own – Matheus Doria had a good effort from a free kick and Brian Lozano hit the post – but they couldn’t find the breakthrough.
Instead, in the 50th minute, Cruz Azul added to their lead. Santos couldn’t clear a free kick and Elías Hernández sent the loose ball through a crowd that screened Orozco, who stood frozen on his line as Hernández made it 2-0.
It looked like Santos had gotten a lifeline in the 67th minute, after Jesús Corona lost the ball on the end line and Julio César Furch put it into the empty net, but after VAR review it was determined the ball had gone out of play and the would-be goal was disallowed.
Cruz Azul was then able to add an insurance goal in the 80th minute, when Luis Romo received the ball at the top of the box and sent it into the net via a helpful deflection to make it 3-0 for the hosts.
With the 3-0 win, Cruz Azul reaches three points while Santos still has three.
