Tigres UANL earned their first win of the Clausura 2020 with a 2-1 victory against Atlas. The result keeps the universitarios unbeaten at home this season, while the Rojinegros have now lost two in a row.
The hosts started the game off strongly and they took the lead in the 10th minute. Luis Quiñones received the ball in midfield, ran it into the box, and beat Camilo Vargas to make it 1-0 for Tigres early on.
It looked like Tigres was coming to life after a slow start to the season, but they were unable to maintain the pace. Atlas wasn’t able to generate that much themselves, though, aside from a counterattack led by Ignacio Jeraldino and Luciano Acosta that could have been more dangerous than it ultimately was.
But Atlas was thrown a lifeline early in the second half when Luis Rodríguez was called for a foul in the box. After VAR review, the visitors were awarded a penalty kick. Jeraldino stepped up to take the spot kick, and he converted it to tie the game 1-1 in the 49th minute.
But just after the hour mark, André-Pierre Gignac restored Tigres’ lead. In the 64th minute, the Frenchman ran on to a misplaced back-pass, got behind the defense, and beat Vargas to make it 2-1 for the universitarios.
Atlas was unable to muster another equalizer, and Tigres held on for their first victory of the season.
With the 2-1 win, Tigres reach four points while Atlas still has three.
