Following Atlas’s elimination in the Copa MX at the hand of Toluca, the club announced the departure of coach Leandro Cufré and his coaching staff.
Cufré, 41, leaves Atlas sitting in 14th place in the league table with one win and two losses in the Clausura 2020. He was in charge of the Rojinegros for 31 total games, with a record of 11 wins, 5 draws, and 15 losses in that span.
The day after confirming Cufré’s departure, Atlas announced his replacement: Rafael Puente Jr.
Rafa Puente, 41, is joined by assistants Francisco Rotllán, Rodrigo Roque, and Juan Carlos Cruz, as well as Axel Bierbaum as physical trainer.
Puente started his coaching career with Lobos BUAP in Ascenso MX; he lead the Licántropos to the league title in the Clausura 2017 season, and also oversaw their promotion to Liga MX as they beat Dorados de Sinaloa in the promotion playoff. Following Lobos, he joined Querétaro for the Apertura 2018 season, where he led them to the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
After being linked to various clubs over the past few months, Puente will now take charge of Atlas as he looks to improve their standing in the league table.
