Mexico Pulls Out of 2017 Copa Libertadores

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoEnrique Bonilla, president of Liga MX, officially announced on Friday that Liga MX clubs will not participate in the 2017 edition of the Copa Libertadores.

A schedule change in the South American club tournament, which will now run from February to November, would provoke a number of scheduling conflicts for Mexican clubs.

Mexican teams have participated in the tournament since 1998, and three teams even reached the finals, although no Mexican clubs have ever won it.

Copa Libertadores: Pumas UNAM vs Independiente del Valle – Where to Watch

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoThe final participant in the 2016 Copa Libertadores semifinals will be determined on Thursday night as Pumas UNAM hosts Independiente del Valle in the second leg of their quarterfinal series.

The winner will advance to the semifinals to face Boca Juniors. Sao Paulo vs Atlético Nacional will be the other semifinal pairing.

Copa Libertadores: Independiente del Valle vs Pumas UNAM – Recap and Highlights

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoIndependiente del Valle beat Pumas UNAM 2-1 to take the advantage in their Copa Libertadores quarterfinal series. A brace by José Angulo put the Ecuadorians ahead, but Fidel Martínez scored what could prove to be a valuable away goal for the universitarios.

The visitors had the first good chance of the game in the 10th minute, when Ismael Sosa drove into the box and sent a low cross to Matías Britos. However, the Uruguayan couldn’t find the target.

Copa Libertadores: Independiente del Valle vs Pumas UNAM – Where to Watch

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoA week after the other three Copa Libertadores quarterfinal first leg matches were played, Independiente del Valle and Pumas UNAM will get their own quarterfinal series underway.

Independiente (ECU) upset defending champions River Plate in the round of sixteen and they will now look to do the same to second-seeded Pumas UNAM. The universitarios advanced past Deportivo Táchira in the prior round and they will look to become the fifth Mexican team to reach the Copa Libertadores semifinals here.

2016 Copa Libertadores Quarterfinals Set

Pumas UNAM, who dispatched Deportivo Táchira (VEN) in the round of sixteen, will now face Independiente del Valle (ECU) for a spot in the semifinals.

Copa Libertadores: Toluca vs Sao Paulo – Recap and Highlights

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoToluca defeated Sao Paulo 3-1 on Wednesday evening, but even that wasn’t enough to overcome their sizable first-leg deficit; the Brazilians advanced with a 5-3 aggregate victory.

The Diablos Rojos needed to score a minimum of five goals in order to advance directly, or win 4-0 to send the game to penalties. They came out looking to score early and often and they found their first goal in the 17th minute.  Continue reading

Copa Libertadores: Pumas UNAM vs Deportivo Táchira – Recap and Highlights

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoPumas UNAM defeated Deportivo Táchira 2-0 on Tuesday night in the second leg of their round of sixteen series to advance to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 aggregate victory.

The universitarios needed to win this game by two goals in order to overcome the first-leg deficit, and that’s exactly what they did. An early goal by Eduardo Herrera inspired the hosts, but it wasn’t until the 80th minute that they were able to take the aggregate lead.  Continue reading

Liga MX in the 2016 Copa Libertadores: Round of 16 Second Legs – Where to Watch

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoPumas UNAM and Toluca both have to overturn first-leg deficits in order to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2016 Copa Libertadores. The universitarios have a good chance of doing so, while the Diablos Rojos will need a minor miracle in order to advance.

On Tuesday, Pumas will host Deportivo Táchira. The Venezuelans won the first leg 1-0, so Pumas will need to win by two goals in order to advance. When these two faced off in the group stage, Pumas picked up an impressive 4-1 victory in their home game, and they will look for a similar result here.  Continue reading

Copa Libertadores: Sao Paulo vs Toluca – Recap and Highlights

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoThere is still a second leg to play, but Sao Paulo has all-but-sealed their advancement after a 4-0 thumping of Toluca in the first leg of their round of sixteen tie. The Brazilians were the better team from start to finish and they could have even run the score up more. Toluca will need a minor miracle in next week’s second leg to keep their run in the 2016 Copa Libertadores alive.

The Diablos Rojos struggled to get into the game, with Sao Paulo dominating possession and chances. Their pressure paid off in the 26th minute, when a set piece gave Sao Paulo the lead. A long throw into the box got past everyone and bounced to Michel Bastos, who took it on the volley to beat a frozen Talavera and give O Tricolor the 1-0 advantage.  Continue reading

Copa Libertadores: Deportivo Táchira vs Pumas UNAM – Recap and Highlights

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoIn the first leg of their round of sixteen tie, Deportivo Táchira defeated 10-man Pumas UNAM by the minimum difference to take a slight advantage into next week’s decisive second leg.

Táchira looked to control the rhythm of the game, and they had the first chances, although they were largely limited to shots from mid-range in the early going. It took Pumas about a quarter of an hour to settle into the match, with the universitarios concentrating mainly on remaining organized and thwarting the hosts.
