Venados 1-2 Cafetaleros
Cafetaleros remained top of Group 1 with their 1-2 away win against Venados. The result leaves the hosts winless and pointless in this competition. Cafetaleros looked dangerous throughout, but Venados’ debutant goalkeeper, Andrés Gudiño, made several good saves to keep the game goalless going into halftime.
But just one minute after the restart, Cafetaleros took the lead. Yoel Bárcenas finished off a cross to make it 0-1. In the 58th minute, they made it 0-1 as Bárcenas assisted Leonardo Ramos to put the visitors comfortably ahead. Venados pulled a goal back late after Luciano Nequecaur converted an 80th-minute penalty kick, but they were unable to go on to tie the game.
With the 1-2 win, Cafetaleros reach six points while Venados still have zero.
Toluca 2-2 Mineros de Zacatecas
Both teams had the lead at one time or another, but in the end Toluca and Mineros de Zacatecas had to settle for a 2-2 draw in this Group 4 game. The visitors surprised Toluca by taking the lead in just the 6th minute, when Guillermo Martínez received the ball at the top of the box, cut inside, and made it 0-1 for Mineros. But the Diablos Rojos tied it up before halftime, with Ángel Reyna playing a free kick to Alexis Canelo, whose low shot went through the wall to make it 1-1 in the 31st minute.
Then, in the second half, Toluca took the lead through Luis Quiñones, who found the left-hand corner in the 59th minute. But the hosts relaxed after taking the lead, which allowed Mineros to score a late equalizer. In the 83rd minute, Miguel Velázquez played in Eder Cruz, whose first-time shot made it 2-2.
With the 2-2 draw, Toluca and Mineros both reach one point.
Alebrijes de Oaxaca 1-0 Veracruz (Group 6)
Alebrijes de Oaxaca earned their first victory of the Copa MX with a 1-0 win against Veracruz. The Tiburones Rojos had the first chance of the game, with a dangerous cross into the box that David Álvarez very nearly deflected into his own net. After that, though, the hosts took control and Rodrigo Noya opened the scoring for Oaxaca in the 33rd minute.
In the second half, Alebrijes sat back to defend their lead, ceding more of the ball to the visitors. Veracruz was unable to do much with their possession, however, while Oaxaca looked dangerous on the counter. In the end, the lone goal was enough for the hosts.
With the 1-0 win, Alebrijes reach three points while Veracruz still has zero.
Puebla 1-0 Atlante (Group 4)
Puebla beat Atlante 1-0 in the opening game of Group 4 thanks to a penalty kick late in the first half. The hosts started the game off well and could have opened the scoring in the very first minute when Gabriel Esparza found himself unmarked in the box with the ball, but he couldn’t put his shot on target.
Then, in the 41st minute, Gabriel España was called for a handball in the box. Carlos Salom stepped up to take the penalty kick and he converted it to give Puebla the 1-0 lead. The Poblanos had chances to add to their lead in the second half, but the final touch was lacking. Atlante did little to threaten a tying goal and in the end the PK was enough for Puebla.
With the 1-0 win, Puebla reaches three points while Atlante still has zero.
Venados 1-1 Atlante (Group 6)
Venados earned their first point of the Copa MX in their final game of the tournament with a 1-1 draw with Atlante. The result leaves Atlante needing several other results to go their way in order to advance. The visitors looked the better side for long stretches of the game, but Venados defended valiantly and prevented the Potros from getting the win they needed.
Then, late in the second half, the hosts took the lead from the penalty spot. Fernando Herrera was called for a foul on Freddy Martín, and Leandro Navarro converted the spot kick to make it 1-0 in the 72nd minute. But Atlante quickly found a response, with Óscar Uscanga tying the game 1-1 in the 76th minute.
With the 1-1 draw, Venados reach one point while Atlante reaches five.
Necaxa 1-2 Jaguares de Chiapas (Group 5)
Necaxa took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they fell 1-2 to Jaguares de Chiapas. The result ends the Rayos’ unbeaten run in the competition, while also giving Jaguares their first victory. Necaxa started the game off well, and they took the lead in just the 8th minute. Fabián Espíndola finished off a loose ball after it rebounded against the woodwork to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
Jaguares didn’t properly settle into the game until the second half, and even then it took a mistake by Necaxa to allow them to get on the board. Luis Miño recovered the ball at the top of the box and sent it past Yosgart Gutiérrez to make it 1-1 in the 67th minute. With the score level, the intensity of the game ratcheted up as both teams looked for a winner. Just as the game was looking destined to end 1-1, Enrique Esqueda completed the comeback for Jaguares with his 86th minute goal.
With the 1-2 win, Jaguares reach four points while Necaxa still has four.
Atlas 1-1 Mineros de Zacatecas (Group 4)
Atlas is still winless in the Copa MX after tonight’s 1-1 draw with Mineros de Zacatecas in Group 4 play. However, the result did give them their first point of the competition and considering how the game started, they will be happy to take it. In the fifth minute, Mauro Laínes saw his shot hit the post, but it then rebounded against defender Cristian Calderón and in, giving Mineros the lead with an own-goal.
Atlas reacted well to that bit of misfortune, and they pressed forward in search of an equalizer. They found it in the 33rd minute, when Christian Tabó finished off a through ball to make it 1-1. In the second half, both teams looked for a winning goal, but Miguel Fraga and Carlos Velázquez were in good form in goal to prevent either side from scoring a second.
With the 1-1 draw, Atlas reaches one point while Mineros reach two.
Santos Laguna 1-2 Coras Tepic (Group 3)
Coras Tepic surprised Santos Laguna with a late goal to earn a 1-2 away win in this Group 3 match. The Liga MX side has now lost two cup games in a row, while Coras earned a victory in their debut in the tournament. The visitors opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a well-taken shot by Daniel Ríos that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
The first legs of the Apertura 2016 Ascenso MX quarterfinals saw two lower seeds earn victories. All four series, however, are separated by no more than a goal, leaving everyone still in it ahead of this weekend’s decisive second legs.
Alebrijes de Oaxaca 2-1 Celaya
The visitors took the lead in the 33rd minute through Abraham Isaí Riestra, whose header found the back of the net. But Alebrijes fought back in the second half with a 49th minute equalizer from Diego Martínez. Then, in the 69th minute, Lucero Álvarez scored from the penalty spot to give 8th-seeded Oaxaca the 2-1 victory.
An own-goal was all that separated the sides as Chivas de Guadalajara beat Alebrijes de Oaxaca 1-0 in the Apertura 2016 Copa MX quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
Alebrijes had the first chance of the night in the first minute, when Chivas lost the ball trying to play out of the back. However, Diego Martínez was unable to get past Toño Rodríguez to open the scoring.
Chivas settled into the game after that early scare, as they began to control the ball and the pace of the game. Their first dangerous opportunity came in the 15th minute, when Javier López forced a good save out of Lucero Álvarez.
