C18 Copa MX Week 3 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Venados 1-2 Cafetaleros
Cafetaleros remained top of Group 1 with their 1-2 away win against Venados. The result leaves the hosts winless and pointless in this competition. Cafetaleros looked dangerous throughout, but Venados’ debutant goalkeeper, Andrés Gudiño, made several good saves to keep the game goalless going into halftime.

But just one minute after the restart, Cafetaleros took the lead. Yoel Bárcenas finished off a cross to make it 0-1. In the 58th minute, they made it 0-1 as Bárcenas assisted Leonardo Ramos to put the visitors comfortably ahead. Venados pulled a goal back late after Luciano Nequecaur converted an 80th-minute penalty kick, but they were unable to go on to tie the game.

With the 1-2 win, Cafetaleros reach six points while Venados still have zero.

C18 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Wednesday’s Games

Toluca 2-2 Mineros de Zacatecas
Both teams had the lead at one time or another, but in the end Toluca and Mineros de Zacatecas had to settle for a 2-2 draw in this Group 4 game. The visitors surprised Toluca by taking the lead in just the 6th minute, when Guillermo Martínez received the ball at the top of the box, cut inside, and made it 0-1 for Mineros. But the Diablos Rojos tied it up before halftime, with Ángel Reyna playing a free kick to Alexis Canelo, whose low shot went through the wall to make it 1-1 in the 31st minute.

Then, in the second half, Toluca took the lead through Luis Quiñones, who found the left-hand corner in the 59th minute. But the hosts relaxed after taking the lead, which allowed Mineros to score a late equalizer. In the 83rd minute, Miguel Velázquez played in Eder Cruz, whose first-time shot made it 2-2.

With the 2-2 draw, Toluca and Mineros both reach one point.

A17 Copa MX Week 4 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Celaya 0-1 Monterrey (Group 2)
Monterrey remained unbeaten in the Copa MX with a 0-1 away win against Celaya. The result leaves Celaya winless in this competition. The game started out evenly, with possession shared and few clear chances at either end. In the 36th minute, Ángel Reyna came close to opening the scoring for the hosts, but he was denied by the post.

The pace picked up a bit in the second half, and Monterrey began to look the better side, particularly once Rogelio Funes Mori, Dorlan Pabón, and Carlos Sánchez were subbed on. In the 71st minute, the Rayados took the lead after Funes Mori finished off a rebound from close range to make it 0-1.

With the 0-1 win, Monterrey reaches seven points while Celaya still has one.

A17 Copa MX Week 2 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Celaya 1-1 Pumas UNAM (Group 2)
Celaya took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Pumas UNAM. The result keeps Celaya winless while the universitarios took a point in their Copa debut. There were chances at both ends in the first half, with Ángel Reyna and Joffre Guerrón looking dangerous for their respective teams, but it wasn’t until the second half that the hosts found the breakthrough.

In the 65th minute, Celaya mounted a quick counterattack, with Reyna finding Pablo Ruíz, whose shot was blocked. But the rebound fell to Diego de la Tejera, who made it 1-0 for the Toros. They dropped back to defend their lead, but Pumas found the equalizer in the 77th minute. From a corner kick, José García sent the ball back across for Luis Quintana, whose bicycle kick made it 1-1.

With the 1-1 draw, Celaya and Pumas both reach one point.

A17 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Wednesday’s Games

Monterrey 3-0 Celaya (Group 2)
Monterrey earned a comfortable 3-0 win against Celaya in this Group 2 opener. The Rayados looked the better side from the beginning and they dominated possession. The visitors sat back and defended, and it took Monterrey more than half an hour to begin to seriously threaten Celaya’s goal. Rogelio Funes Mori had a would-be goal disallowed for offside and was later denied by the keeper as the first half finished goalless.

In the 51st minute, the Rayados opened the scoring, with Alfonso González’s left-footed shot making it 1-0. The chances began to come more regularly after that, but it wasn’t until the 77th minute that Funes Mori was able to make it 2-0. Carlos Sánchez wrapped up the scoring with his golazo after an assist from Neri Cardozo.

With the 3-0 win, Monterrey reaches three points while Celaya still has zero.

Querétaro and Celaya will play a fundraising friendly to support Ezequiel Orozco and Remigio Ochoa. Orozco, a Murciélagos player, and Ochoa, a physiotherapist for Celaya, both have cancer.

C17 Copa MX Week 6 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxToluca 3-1 Celaya (Group 8)
Toluca remained atop Group 8 with a 3-1 victory over Celaya. The result sees the Diablos Rojos advance to the round of sixteen while Celaya is eliminated. Toluca was assured of first in the group regardless of tonight’s result, and although they started the game off better it was the visitors who took the lead. In the 13th minute, Celaya won a penalty kick and Rodrigo López converted it to give the Toros the 0-1 lead. Toluca thought they had tied it just before halftime, but Alfredo Moreno’s would-be goal was disallowed after it was ruled that the ball had gone out of play in the buildup.

Nevertheless, Toluca rallied in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Rubens Sambueza scored direct from a free kick to make it 1-1; then, in the 72nd minute, the referee pointed to the penalty spot again, this time in favor of the hosts. Enrique Triverio converted the PK to make it 2-1, and then Fernando Uribe sealed the victory with his goal in the 87th minute.

With the 3-1 win, Toluca reaches 10 points while Celaya still has two.

C17 Copa MX Week 5 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxAtlante 1-3 Chivas de Guadalajara (Group 6)
Atlante took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Chivas de Guadalajara came from behind to earn a 1-3 away win in this Group 6 match. The victory ensures Chivas will advance to the knockout rounds of the Copa MX. The opening goal came in the 24th minute through Fernando Espinosa, whose shot from the center of the box made it 1-0.

Chivas had to wait until the second half to find a goal of their own, with Carlos Fierro making it 1-1 in the 61st minute. A few minutes later, both teams were reduced to 10 men with the sending offs of Carlos Cauich and Hedgardo Marín. Ultimately it was Chivas who took advantage of the extra space on the field, with goals from Eduardo López in the 84th minute and Michelle Benítez in stoppage time to give them the 1-3 victory.

With the 1-3 win, Chivas reaches 10 points while Atlante still has four.

Coras Tepic surprised Santos Laguna with a late goal to earn a 1-2 away win in this Group 3 match. The Liga MX side has now lost two cup games in a row, while Coras earned a victory in their debut in the tournament. The visitors opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a well-taken shot by Daniel Ríos that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
