Atlas 2-1 Puebla (Group 4)
Atlas kept their hopes of advancing alive with a 2-1 win over Puebla in this Group 4 game. The Poblanos are still top of the group but are now vulnerable to losing that spot. The Rojinegros went into this game winless in Copa MX play, but they took the lead in the 18th minute. Édgar Zaldívar won the ball and played in Jahir Barraza, whose diagonal shot made it 1-0.
The hosts added to their lead in the second half, when Rodolfo Salinas finished off a corner kick to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute. Atlas looked in complete control, but Puebla made the final few minutes interesting after they reduced the deficit in the 85th minute, with the unfortunate Federico González scoring an own-goal to put the visitors on the board. However, Atlas was able to hold on to the lead and secure their first win of the competition.
With the 2-1 win, Atlas reaches four points while Puebla still has seven.
Toluca 1-1 Veracruz (Group 8)
Veracruz took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Toluca scored late on to make it 1-1. The result keeps the Diablos Rojos unbeaten in the Copa MX and leaves the Tiburones Rojos winless. The hosts looked better in the early going, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring. In the 26th minute, Daniel Villalva got free and found Felipe Flores; the Chilean beat the goalkeeper to give Veracruz the 0-1 lead. Then, just before halftime, they had the opportunity to make it two after a 44th-minute foul gave them a penalty kick. However, Adrián Luna’s PK was stopped by Luis García to keep it 0-1.
In the second half, Toluca controlled the ball as they looked for a tying goal, but their final touch was lacking. Finally, in the 88th minute, Óscar Rojas sent in a low cross and debutant Andy García knocked it in to make it 1-1. Carlos Reinoso was then ejected from the sidelines in stoppage time to cap off a frustrating night for Veracruz.
With the 1-1 draw, Toluca reaches seven points while Veracruz still has two.
Monterrey 5-0 Dorados de Sinaloa (Group 7)
Monterrey remained perfect in the Copa MX with a 5-0 dismantling of Dorados de Sinaloa in this Group 7 game. The loss keeps Dorados winless in the competition. The Rayados opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, when Efraín Juárez headed home a free kick from Dorlan Pabón to make it 1-0. Soon after that, Pabón provided another assist, this time to Edwin Cardona, as Monterrey took the 2-0 lead in the 29th minute. Just before halftime, Rogelio Funes Mori made it 3-0 to put the game out of reach for Dorados with 45 minutes left to play.
The hosts continued to dominate in the second half, and their continued pressure paid off as Funes Mori finished off his brace in the 71st minute to make it 4-0. Debutant Ángel López put the icing on the cake with his goal in the 82nd minute to give the Rayados a commanding 5-0 lead.
With the 5-0 win, Monterrey reaches six points while Dorados remain on zero.
Santos Laguna 1-2 Coras Tepic (Group 3)
Coras Tepic surprised Santos Laguna with a late goal to earn a 1-2 away win in this Group 3 match. The Liga MX side has now lost two cup games in a row, while Coras earned a victory in their debut in the tournament. The visitors opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a well-taken shot by Daniel Ríos that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
Jaguares de Chiapas 2-2 Chivas de Guadalajara – Group 2
With advancement to the knockout rounds already assured for both clubs, Jaguares de Chiapas and Chivas de Guadalajara played out a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night.
Alonso Escoboza gave Jaguares the lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after Oswaldo Alanís was sanctioned for a foul. But Chivas tied it up through Carlos Salcido’s header in the 32nd minute before Alan Pulido converted a PK to put the visitors ahead just two minutes after that. Then, in the second half, Escoboza finished off his brace to level the match in the 72nd minute.
Cafetaleros de Tapachula 1-1 Jaguares de Chiapas – Group 2
Cafetaleros took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Jaguares to remain winless – but also unbeaten – in the Copa MX this season. The hosts looked the more dangerous team in the first half and Abraham Carreño missed a great chance in the 27th minute when he was one-on-one with the keeper. But then Óscar Sánchez scored a golazo in the 35th minute to give Cafetaleros the 1-0 lead.
Celaya vs Atlante – Group 1
Celaya and Atlante are both still looking for their first win in this competition after playing out a 1-1 draw in a game that finished 10 vs 10. Celaya started the game off better and they took the lead in just the sixth minute, when Ángel Reyna sent in a cross for Hugo López, who made no mistake with his finish. The hosts had a few chances to add to their lead but they were unable to capitalize on them.
Alebrijes de Oaxaca 0-0 Murciélagos – Group 4
Neither Alebrijes de Oaxaca nor Murciélagos could find the breakthrough in this all-Ascenso MX match to start their Copa MX campaigns. The home team had the better of play in the first half, but the final touch left something to be desired as all their attempts went either well wide or directly to the goalkeeper. As for Murciélagos, their chances were largely limited to set pieces.
This Friday in an Ascenso MX match between Coras Tepic and Atlético San Luis, San Luis allowed Coras to score an uncontested goal in the spirit of Fair Play.
In the 54th minute of the game, while Coras was leading 2-0, an injury to the home side caused a halt to the game. The match was restarted with a drop ball, and San Luis attempted to return the ball to Tepic, but Othoniel Arce ran on to it and scored to make it 2-1. Continue reading →
San Luis twice took the lead and twice lost it before ultimately triumphing over Coras Tepic on penalties in this Clausura 2016 Copa MX quarterfinal. After regulation ended in a 2-2 draw, the game was decided from the penalty spot, where San Luis won 4-3.
The visitors took the lead in the 25th minute, when Leonardo Villagra pounced on a mistake in the back to send his diagonal shot into the back of the net.
