Santos Laguna 2-1 Toluca
Santos Laguna remained perfect in the Clausura 2018 Copa MX with a 2-1 victory against Toluca in this Group 4 game. The result leaves the Diablos Rojos winless in this competition. Santos opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark when Brian Lozano scored direct from a free kick to make it 1-0.
In the second half, Toluca found the equalizer. In the 66th minute, Fernando Uribe’s initial shot was saved but the rebound fell to Rodrigo Salinas, who made it 1-1. However, Santos soon retook the lead. In the 70th minute, Lozano hit the post, with the rebound then falling to Julio César Furch, who made it 2-1. Although Santos then went down to 10 men after Jorge Sánchez was red-cared, Toluca couldn’t take advantage as just minutes later they saw Pablo Barrientos sent off.
With the 2-1 win, Santos reaches six points while Toluca still has one.
Toluca 2-2 Mineros de Zacatecas
Both teams had the lead at one time or another, but in the end Toluca and Mineros de Zacatecas had to settle for a 2-2 draw in this Group 4 game. The visitors surprised Toluca by taking the lead in just the 6th minute, when Guillermo Martínez received the ball at the top of the box, cut inside, and made it 0-1 for Mineros. But the Diablos Rojos tied it up before halftime, with Ángel Reyna playing a free kick to Alexis Canelo, whose low shot went through the wall to make it 1-1 in the 31st minute.
Then, in the second half, Toluca took the lead through Luis Quiñones, who found the left-hand corner in the 59th minute. But the hosts relaxed after taking the lead, which allowed Mineros to score a late equalizer. In the 83rd minute, Miguel Velázquez played in Eder Cruz, whose first-time shot made it 2-2.
With the 2-2 draw, Toluca and Mineros both reach one point.
Chivas de Guadalajara earned a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout win against Correcaminos after a 2-2 draw in regulation.
Chivas looked the better side for much of the first half, but they weren’t able to capitalize on their opportunities. Finally, just before halftime, Oswaldo Alanís’s header was redirected into the net by the unfortunate Mario Valdez, whose own-goal made it 1-0.
In the second half, “Chofis” López made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute to put Chivas in firm control of the game.
Atlante 1-3 Chivas de Guadalajara (Group 6)
Atlante took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Chivas de Guadalajara came from behind to earn a 1-3 away win in this Group 6 match. The victory ensures Chivas will advance to the knockout rounds of the Copa MX. The opening goal came in the 24th minute through Fernando Espinosa, whose shot from the center of the box made it 1-0.
Chivas had to wait until the second half to find a goal of their own, with Carlos Fierro making it 1-1 in the 61st minute. A few minutes later, both teams were reduced to 10 men with the sending offs of Carlos Cauich and Hedgardo Marín. Ultimately it was Chivas who took advantage of the extra space on the field, with goals from Eduardo López in the 84th minute and Michelle Benítez in stoppage time to give them the 1-3 victory.
With the 1-3 win, Chivas reaches 10 points while Atlante still has four.
Toluca 1-1 Veracruz (Group 8)
Veracruz took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Toluca scored late on to make it 1-1. The result keeps the Diablos Rojos unbeaten in the Copa MX and leaves the Tiburones Rojos winless. The hosts looked better in the early going, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring. In the 26th minute, Daniel Villalva got free and found Felipe Flores; the Chilean beat the goalkeeper to give Veracruz the 0-1 lead. Then, just before halftime, they had the opportunity to make it two after a 44th-minute foul gave them a penalty kick. However, Adrián Luna’s PK was stopped by Luis García to keep it 0-1.
In the second half, Toluca controlled the ball as they looked for a tying goal, but their final touch was lacking. Finally, in the 88th minute, Óscar Rojas sent in a low cross and debutant Andy García knocked it in to make it 1-1. Carlos Reinoso was then ejected from the sidelines in stoppage time to cap off a frustrating night for Veracruz.
With the 1-1 draw, Toluca reaches seven points while Veracruz still has two.
Atlas 1-1 Mineros de Zacatecas (Group 4)
Atlas is still winless in the Copa MX after tonight’s 1-1 draw with Mineros de Zacatecas in Group 4 play. However, the result did give them their first point of the competition and considering how the game started, they will be happy to take it. In the fifth minute, Mauro Laínes saw his shot hit the post, but it then rebounded against defender Cristian Calderón and in, giving Mineros the lead with an own-goal.
Atlas reacted well to that bit of misfortune, and they pressed forward in search of an equalizer. They found it in the 33rd minute, when Christian Tabó finished off a through ball to make it 1-1. In the second half, both teams looked for a winning goal, but Miguel Fraga and Carlos Velázquez were in good form in goal to prevent either side from scoring a second.
With the 1-1 draw, Atlas reaches one point while Mineros reach two.
Santos Laguna 1-2 Coras Tepic (Group 3)
Coras Tepic surprised Santos Laguna with a late goal to earn a 1-2 away win in this Group 3 match. The Liga MX side has now lost two cup games in a row, while Coras earned a victory in their debut in the tournament. The visitors opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a well-taken shot by Daniel Ríos that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
Cafelateros 1-1 Mineros de Zacatecas
Mineros de Zacatecas booked their spot in the semifinals after a 1-1 draw with Cafetaleros gave them the 3-2 aggregate victory. The hosts came out looking to overturn the first-leg deficit, and they created the first good chance of the game in the 21st minute through Abraham Carreño, who hit the post. However, it was the visitors who would take the lead. In the 29th minute, Roberto Nurse finished off a through ball from Marcos Caicedo to give Mineros the 0-1 (1-3 aggregate) lead. The first legs of the Ascenso MX quarterfinals were held this Wednesday, and Necaxa, Celaya, and Mineros de Zacatecas took the advantage heading into Saturday’s second legs.
Correcaminos 0-1 Necaxa
Correcaminos started the game with the majority of possession, but they couldn’t create any good goalscoring opportunities. Then the visitors struck early through Rodrigo Prieto, who finished off a cross from Xabi Báez in the 11th minute to give Necaxa the lead. Necaxa had several good chances to extend their lead, but goalkeeper Daniel Vogel kept the difference to the minimum. Then, in the 90th minute, Correcaminos nearly tied it through Hugo Sánchez, only for Yosgart Gutiérrez to make an impressive save. Continue reading →
