Toluca 3-1 Celaya (Group 8)
Toluca remained atop Group 8 with a 3-1 victory over Celaya. The result sees the Diablos Rojos advance to the round of sixteen while Celaya is eliminated. Toluca was assured of first in the group regardless of tonight’s result, and although they started the game off better it was the visitors who took the lead. In the 13th minute, Celaya won a penalty kick and Rodrigo López converted it to give the Toros the 0-1 lead. Toluca thought they had tied it just before halftime, but Alfredo Moreno’s would-be goal was disallowed after it was ruled that the ball had gone out of play in the buildup.
Nevertheless, Toluca rallied in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Rubens Sambueza scored direct from a free kick to make it 1-1; then, in the 72nd minute, the referee pointed to the penalty spot again, this time in favor of the hosts. Enrique Triverio converted the PK to make it 2-1, and then Fernando Uribe sealed the victory with his goal in the 87th minute.
With the 3-1 win, Toluca reaches 10 points while Celaya still has two.
