CCL: Tigres UANL vs Herediano – Recap and Highlights

concacaf championsTigres UANL booked their spot in the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over Herediano. The universitarios needed just a draw to guarantee their advancement, while the Costa Ricans needed to pick up all three points to move on.

The hosts put out a strong lineup and they took the lead shortly before the half-hour mark. In the 27th minute, Tigres earned a free kick and Herediano was unable to clear it away, with Hugo Ayala pouncing on the rebound to make it 1-0.

CCL: Monterrey vs Árabe Unido – Recap and Highlights

concacaf championsMonterrey suffered a surprise 2-3 defeat to Árabe Unido in the second matchweek of Group D action in the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League. The Rayados remain top of the table despite the loss, due to the goal difference tiebreaker, but the Panamanians are now level on points with a game in hand.

The visitors struck early on. In the 11th minute, José González received a partly-cleared corner kick outside the box and he sent his shot from distance unstoppably into the bottom corner to make it 0-1.

CCL: Pachuca vs Olimpia – Recap and Highlights

concacaf championsIn the opening match of Group E, Pachuca defeated Olimpia 1-0 on Tuesday night to get their 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League campaign off to a good start.

The Tuzos put out a somewhat alternative lineup full of young players, with six changes made from the starting XI that faced Necaxa in league play last weekend. Nevertheless, it took just four minutes for Pachuca to open the scoring.

Copa América: Mexico vs Jamaica – Recap and Highlights

COPA_America_Centenario_2016_emblem_fc_cmykMexico booked their spot in the knockout rounds of the Copa América Centenario with a 2-0 victory over Jamaica on Thursday night. The victory extends El Tri’s winning streak to 11 games and their unbeaten streak to 21, tying their all-time record.

Javier Hernández moved a step closer to tying Jared Borgetti as Mexico’s all-time leading goalscorer when he scored his 45th international goal in the 18th minute to put El Tri ahead. “Chicharito” headed home a cross from “Tecatito” Corona to make it 1-0 for Mexico.

Copa América: Mexico vs Uruguay – Recap and Highlights

COPA_America_Centenario_2016_emblem_fc_cmykWith two goals in the closing stages of the game, Mexico earned a 3-1 victory over Uruguay to claim first place in Group C after the opening round of matches. In a testy game that finished 10 vs 10, El Tri was able to extend their winning streak to 10 matches and their unbeaten streak to 20.

The night started off badly for Uruguay, even before the game kicked off: the Chilean national anthem was played in place of the Uruguayan one during the pre-game ceremonies. Things did not improve for La Celeste when the match got underway, as Mexico took the lead after just three minutes.

Copa Libertadores: Gremio vs Toluca – Recap and Highlights

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoGremio defeated Toluca 1-0 on Tuesday night in the final Group 6 game. Both teams were already assured of a spot in the knockout rounds prior to tonight, and with first place in the group locked up, Toluca sent a somewhat alternative side to Brazil. The loss ends the Diablos Rojos’ unbeaten run in this competition.

The hosts took the initiative in this game and created several chances through their play down the wings. In the 15th minute, a cross into the box found an unmarked Ramiro, whose header beat Liborio Sánchez to make it 1-0 for Gremio.  Continue reading

Copa_Bridgestone_Libertadores_logoPumas UNAM booked their spot in the knockout rounds of the 2016 Copa Libertadores with a come-from-behind 4-1 win against Olimpia on Wednesday. The loss prevents the Paraguayans from advancing past the group stage.

World Cup Qualifying: Mexico vs Canada – Recap and Highlights

el triMexico guaranteed their advancement to the Hexagonal round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with two matches to spare in Group A play with a 2-0 win over Canada on Tuesday night. The win keeps Mexico perfect in qualifying and also extends their shutout streak to 360 minutes; El Tri has outscored their opponents 10-0 through four games.

Juan Carlos Osorio made five changes from the team that beat Canada 0-3 on Friday, but the end result was the same. El Tri opened the scoring in the 17th minute from the penalty spot after Doneil Henry was called for a foul on Marco Fabián in the box.
