Both teams had the lead at one time or another, but in the end Necaxa and Jaguares de Chiapas had to settle for a 2-2 draw. The result keeps the Rayos unbeaten in three but winless in four, while Jaguares remain winless in two and winless in four on the road.
With both teams involved in the relegation fight, there was plenty of motivation on both sides to earn a victory. Necaxa seized the initiative and began to test Moisés Muñoz, with Edson Puch having the first opportunity of the night.
Puebla earned a 2-3 away win against Jaguares de Chiapas in the Copa MX round of sixteen.
The Poblanos took the lead shortly before halftime, after having looked the better side for most of the game. In the 37th minute, Álvaro Navarro’s shot from the center of the box made it 0-1 for the visitors.
Just three minutes later, Carlos Orrantía made it 0-2 for Puebla with the help of a deflection off a Jaguares defender.
Despite missing a penalty kick and finishing the game with 10 men, Cruz Azul was still able to end their seven-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory over Jaguares de Chiapas. The result extends Jaguares’ road losing streak to three games.
The excitement was all packed into the second half in this one, starting when Moisés Muñoz was called for a foul on Ángel Mena in the 59th minute. Gabriel Peñalba took the ensuing penalty kick, but Muñoz made the save to keep the game 0-0.
Venados 1-1 Atlante (Group 6)
Venados earned their first point of the Copa MX in their final game of the tournament with a 1-1 draw with Atlante. The result leaves Atlante needing several other results to go their way in order to advance. The visitors looked the better side for long stretches of the game, but Venados defended valiantly and prevented the Potros from getting the win they needed.
Then, late in the second half, the hosts took the lead from the penalty spot. Fernando Herrera was called for a foul on Freddy Martín, and Leandro Navarro converted the spot kick to make it 1-0 in the 72nd minute. But Atlante quickly found a response, with Óscar Uscanga tying the game 1-1 in the 76th minute.
With the 1-1 draw, Venados reach one point while Atlante reaches five.
Chivas de Guadalajara had a two-goal lead at halftime but ended up falling 4-3 to Jaguares de Chiapas. The result snaps a two-game losing streak for Jaguares while ending a four-game unbeaten run for El Rebaño.
The game couldn’t have started better for Chivas, who took the lead after just two minutes. Moisés Muñoz made the initial save on Javier López, but the rebound fell to Rodolfo Pizarro, who made it 0-1.
Puebla finally earned their first win of the Clausura 2017 season with a 3-0 victory over Jaguares de Chiapas. The result keeps Puebla unbeaten in three and lifts them off the foot of the league table, while Jaguares have now lost two games in a row – and both of them against relegation rivals.
After going winless through their first six games, Puebla was desperate to put on a good showing in front of their home support, and it didn’t take them long to open the scoring. In the 10th minute, Pablo Míguez beat Moisés Muñoz to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
Pumas UNAM vs Tijuana – 1:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Pumas UNAM (7th) fell 2-0 to Monterrey last weekend to end their four-game unbeaten streak. The universitarios are still unbeaten at home, however, and they will look to get back to winning ways when they return to the Estadio Olímpico Universitario for this one. Pumas don’t have the best attacking record, however, and they’ve scored one or fewer goals in five of their six games this season.
As for Tijuana (2nd), the Xolos fell 1-2 to Necaxa last weekend to end their four-game winning streak. That loss dropped Tijuana out of first place and they’ll look to get back there with another win here. The Xolos have a two-game road winning streak going and they have the best attacking record in the league with 13 goals scored to date.
Necaxa 1-2 Jaguares de Chiapas (Group 5)
Necaxa took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they fell 1-2 to Jaguares de Chiapas. The result ends the Rayos’ unbeaten run in the competition, while also giving Jaguares their first victory. Necaxa started the game off well, and they took the lead in just the 8th minute. Fabián Espíndola finished off a loose ball after it rebounded against the woodwork to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
Jaguares didn’t properly settle into the game until the second half, and even then it took a mistake by Necaxa to allow them to get on the board. Luis Miño recovered the ball at the top of the box and sent it past Yosgart Gutiérrez to make it 1-1 in the 67th minute. With the score level, the intensity of the game ratcheted up as both teams looked for a winner. Just as the game was looking destined to end 1-1, Enrique Esqueda completed the comeback for Jaguares with his 86th minute goal.
With the 1-2 win, Jaguares reach four points while Necaxa still has four.
Monarcas Morelia earned a valuable three points in this game between relegation rivals with a 1-2 away win over Jaguares de Chiapas. The result ends a four-game winless streak for La Monarquía, while Jaguares suffered their first home loss of the season.
Under the interim direction of Roberto Hernández, Morelia started the game off brightly, although they were unable to truly challenge Moisés Muñoz in goal in the early going.
Jaguares de Chiapas beat América 2-0 on Tuesday night in this rescheduled Jornada 1 match. Moisés Muñoz posted a shutout against his former team and a pair of second-half goals gave the hosts their third win of the season, and with it a bit more breathing room in the relegation fight.
Jaguares started the game off better and they used the speed of Franco Arizala and Luis Mendoza to stretch América’s defense. But the Águilas ultimately defended well and then began to create chances of their own, coming closest through a shot from William da Silva.
