C18 Copa MX Week 2 Review: Wednesday’s Games

Querétaro 3-1 Monarcas Morelia
Querétaro moved into first place in Group 9 with a 3-1 victory against Monarcas Morelia in their Clausura 2018 Copa MX debut. The Gallos Blancos took the lead in the 21st minute through Édgar Benítez, whose header made it 1-0 for the hosts. Morelia looked to respond but Querétaro’s defense stood firm, and the hosts had a few chances of their own to add to the lead.

Then, early in the second half, Morelia took advantage of their first set piece of the game to make it 1-1 through Emanuel Loeschbor. But Matías Britos restored Querétaro’s lead in the 63rd minute with a header of his own. Then, in the 83rd minute, Yerson Candelo added an insurance goal as his shot to the upper corner made it 3-1.

With the 3-1 win, Querétaro reaches three points while Morelia still has three.

Disciplinary Report: Clausura 2017 Week 2

The Disciplinary Committee has suspended two players in the aftermath of this weekend’s Jornada 2 games.

The first suspensions of the Clausura season – after no one was red-carded in round one – go to Edson Puch of Querétaro for receiving two yellow cards in the same game and to Fernando Uribe of Toluca for violent conduct.

Both players were given one-game suspensions and will sit out Jornada 3.

Clausura 2018 Week 2 Statistics

Pumas UNAM moved into first place in the table with their 3-1 victory against Atlas while Lobos BUAP remained at the foot of the table with their 0-2 loss to Querétaro. Pumas and León are the only perfect teams, while Lobos and Atlas are the only teams still looking for their first point.

In the relegation fight, Veracruz remained in last place in the Tabla de Cociente with their 0-2 loss to Monterrey, while relegation rivals Lobos, Atlas, and Puebla also lost and Querétaro won.

Veracruz vs Monterrey – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Veracruz lost ground in the relegation fight as they fell 0-2 to Monterrey. The result leaves the Tiburones Rojos winless while the Rayados earned their first victory and remain unbeaten this season.

The game started slowly, with neither team able to take control. Monterrey suffered a setback in the 19th minute when goalkeeper Hugo González had to be subbed out with an apparent muscle injury, but Veracruz was unable to do much to test the backup keeper.

Pumas UNAM vs Atlas – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Pumas UNAM remained perfect this season with a 3-1 victory against Atlas, which moved the universitarios to the top of the table. The result is a second straight defeat for the Rojinegros.

The game started off perfectly for the hosts, who took the lead in just the 6th minute. Nicolás Castillo was unmarked in the box and got to a cross from Jesús Gallardo, sending his low shot past the keeper to make it 1-0 for Pumas.

Chivas de Guadalajara vs Cruz Azul – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Cruz Azul game from behind to earn a 1-3 away win against Chivas de Guadalajara. The result keeps La Máquina unbeaten this season while El Rebaño remain winless.

Chivas controlled the majority of possession in the first half, although Cruz Azul had a few dangerous chances through Martín Rodríguez and Felipe Mora. Nevertheless, it was the hosts who opened the scoring.

Tigres UANL vs Santos Laguna – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

The reigning champions earned their first win of the Clausura 2018 with a 2-1 victory against Santos Laguna. The result is the Laguneros’ first loss of the young season and it knocks them from first place in the table.

Tigres were unbeaten in the Volcán last season and they looked to continue that good home form here. They had a pair of decent chances through Jesús Dueñas and then André-Pierre Gignac before opening the scoring in the 22nd minute.
