The Apertura 2018 edition of the Copa MX continued this week with the second round of group stage games. This week favored the home teams, who picked up six wins and a draw with only two visitors walking off with victories.
América 3-0 Veracruz
Cafetaleros 1-1 Atlético San Luis
Chivas de Guadalajara 3-2 Monarcas Morelia
Pachuca 2-0 Santos Laguna
Necaxa 1-0 TM Fútbol Club
León 2-1 Querétaro
Zacatepec 2-3 Cruz Azul
Monterrey 2-1 Puebla
Toluca 2-3 FC Juárez
Monterrey earned a 0-2 away win against 9-man León to keep the Rayados perfect in the Apertura 2018. The result is a second straight loss for La Fiera, who are currently penultimate in the table.
Pre-game incidents cast a shadow on the game as fights between León and Monterrey fans ended up with authorities detaining 29 people. Liga MX posted a statement condemning such behavior and reminding fans that “safe stadiums are everyone’s responsibility”.
Tigres UANL remained perfect with a 1-0 win against Tijuana. The result extends the universitarios‘ home unbeaten streak to a record-tying 29 games while ending the Xolos’ own unbeaten start to the Apertura season.
Tigres were on the front foot from the beginning as they attacked with intent. They came close in the 13th minute, when Luis Rodríguez tried his luck from distance, but Gibrán Lajud was alert to the danger and made the necessary save.
Lobos BUAP earned their first win of the season with a 2-0 defeat of Veracruz. The result is a second straight loss for the Tiburones Rojos, and a particularly painful one coming as it did against a relegation rival.
Veracruz nearly shot themselves in the foot early on, when Pedro Gallese got caught outside his box with the ball at his feet; Colin Kazim-Richards won the ball off the keeper but couldn’t take advantage of the empty net as his shot was off target.
Necaxa took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Pumas UNAM stormed back for a 5-3 victory. The result is a second straight win for the universitarios, while the Rayos suffered their first loss of the young season.
Pumas had the first chance of the game through Alan Mendoza, but his shot from distance crashed against the crossbar. Then, in the 13th minute, Necaxa took the lead with some good team play. Felipe Callegos found Brian Fernández in the box, and he sent the ball on to Víctor Dávila who made it 0-1 for the visitors.
Cruz Azul remained top of the table – pending the rest of this weekend’s results – with a 0-1 away win against Chivas de Guadalajara. The result extends El Rebaño’s long home winless streak, with Chivas last earning all three points in the Estadio Akron back in October 2017, while La Máquina have now won two in a row to start the season.
The game took place in a downpour in Guadalajara, which caused the kickoff to be delayed by about 25 minutes. The field was covered in patches of standing water, which resulted in a choppy, sloppy game.
América earned their first win of the Apertura 2018 in style with a 3-0 thumping of Atlas. The result shows the Águilas are still hard to beat at home, while Atlas continues their poor road form and remains winless in the Apertura.
The Rojinegros started the game off well, though, as they controlled possession. But the visitors were unable to turn that possession into goals, while América struck from a set piece to take the lead.
