2019-2020 Copa MX Jornada 2 Results & Standings

Jornada 2 of the 2019-2020 Copa MX was a week for the hosts, with six of the seven completed matches ending in victories for the home side and the seventh ending in a draw.

Disciplinary Report: Apertura 2019 Week 2

The Disciplinary Committee has suspended three players and a coach in the aftermath of this weekend’s Jornada 2 games.

Fernando Navarro of León was given a one-game suspension for serious foul play, while Alexis Peña of Necaxa was suspended one game for denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Carlos Salcedo of Tigres UANL will miss the next two games; he was given a one-game suspension for serious foul play, and an additional game for using offensive and/or insulting language and/or gestures.

Apertura 2019 Week 2 Standings & Statistics

Santos Laguna remained in first place with their 3-0 victory against FC Juárez, a result that saw the Bravos drop into last place.

Veracruz dropped into last place in the Tabla de Cociente despite their draw, while relegation rivals Atlético San Luis and Chivas de Guadalajara won, Querétaro drew, and Juárez lost.

Chivas de Guadalajara vs Tigres UANL – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Chivas de Guadalajara closed out Jornada 2 with a 2-0 victory against 10-man Tigres UANL. The result gives el Rebaño their first win of the Apertura, while the universitarios suffered their first loss of the season.

The hosts opened the scoring early and from an unexpected source. In the 9th minute, Antonio Briseño recorded his first Liga MX goal since 2015 when he headed home a corner kick to make it 1-0 for Chivas.

Santos Laguna vs FC Juárez – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Santos Laguna earned a second straight home victory as they beat FC Juárez 3-0. The result sees Santos finish the week at the top of the table, while Juárez has now lost two in a row and is propping up the table.

The hosts came out attacking and had numerous chances, while the Bravos struggled to get into the game. Santos controlled possession and they kept the ball almost entirely in Juárez’s defensive third. In the 11th minute, they appeared to have opened the scoring, but Eryc Castillo’s would-be goal was disallowed for offside.

Atlético San Luis vs Monterrey – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Newly-promoted Atlético San Luis earned a surprise 1-0 victory against Monterrey. The result gives the Potosinos their first win of the Apertura, while alarm bells will be ringing in Monterrey after the Rayados suffered a second straight defeat.

San Luis came out attacking as they looked to atone for their home defeat last weekend, but Monterrey was well-organized at the back. The hosts couldn’t find the breakthrough in the run of play, but their fortunes changed when they were awarded a free kick in the 18th minute.

Pumas UNAM vs Necaxa – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Pumas UNAM earned a 2-0 victory against 10-man Necaxa in their first home game of the season. The result keeps the universitarios perfect and the Rayos winless in the Apertura 2019.

The hosts came out looking for a win in front of their home fans, and it didn’t take them long to take the lead. In the 9th minute, Juan Pablo Vigón headed home a cross from Jeison Angulo to make it 1-0 for Pumas with his first goal for the club.

Tijuana vs Querétaro – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Tijuana took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Querétaro came back for a 1-1 draw. The result keeps both the Xolos and the Gallos Blancos unbeaten in the Apertura 2019.

The hosts looked dangerous from the opening moments, with Camilo Sanvezzo causing problems for his former team and nearly opening the scoring in the 2nd minute after a defensive mistake by the Gallos.

Cruz Azul vs Toluca – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Cruz Azul was moments away from their first win of the Apertura, but a stoppage-time goal by Toluca meant it finished 1-1. The result keeps both teams winless this season, although La Máquina also remain unbeaten.

Cruz Azul controlled the game in the first half, with more possession and more chances, while Toluca sat back to defend and looked somewhat shaky in doing so. But the hosts weren’t able to take advantage. On the other hand, on the few occasions that Toluca managed to get into the attack, they looked dangerous, such as a 9th-minute shot by Federico Mancuella that hit the post.
