Monterrey remained top of the table with their 1-1 draw with Cruz Azul, while Puebla dropped into last with their 2-1 loss to Toluca.
Monterrey and Cruz Azul are still the only unbeaten teams remaining, while Chivas de Guadalajara is the only winless team after Santos Laguna beat León 1-2.
In the relegation fight, Atlas dropped into last place in the Tabla de Cociente with their 2-1 loss to Necaxa, while relegation rivals Veracruz won, Querétaro drew, and Lobos BUAP and Puebla both lost.
Veracruz ended a two-game winless streak – and moved out of last place in the Tabla de Cociente – with a 1-0 victory against Pumas UNAM. The result extends the universitarios‘ losing streak to three games and keeps them winless on the road this season.
The Tiburones Rojos came out looking to make their home-field advantage count, while Pumas looked to impress under the interim direction of Sergio Egea. With a new formation, Pumas created a few chances, but without their leading goalscorer – Nicolás Castillo – they were unable to convert them.
Puebla took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Toluca came back for a 2-1 win. The result ends a three-game winless run for the Diablos Rojos and also keeps them unbeaten at home this season, while Puebla has now lost two in a row.
Neither team was able to take control in the early going as the game bogged down in midfield and was repeatedly interrupted by fouls. The first notable chance came for the hosts in the 22nd minute, when Rubens Sambueza tried his luck from distance, but Moisés Muñoz was able to send it out for a corner kick.
Chivas de Guadalajara is still winless in the Apertura 2017 after playing out a 0-0 draw with Querétaro. The result leaves the Gallos Blancos winless in three.
El Rebaño came out looking to make their home field advantage count as the reigning champions continue to try to get their season on track. But aside from a shot from distance by José Juan Vázquez in the 17th minute, which Tiago Volpi did well to save, most of the first-half chances went Querétaro’s way.
Necaxa snapped a four-game winless streak with a 2-1 victory against Atlas. The result leaves the Rojinegros winless in five and extends their road losing streak to three games. Of even more concern for Atlas: the loss drops them into last place in the Tabla de Cociente, pending Veracruz’s game on Sunday.
Necaxa came out looking to make their home-field advantage count and they created chances from the opening whistle. The breakthrough came in the 17th minute, when the unfortunate Facundo Erpen turned the ball into his own net after Miguel Fraga gave up a rebound on a Pablo Velázquez shot. The own-goal made it 1-0 for the Rayos.
Monarcas Morelia extended their winning streak to two games with a 2-0 victory against América. The result ends a five-game unbeaten streak for the Águilas.
The game started with chances at both ends. Rodolfo Vilchis forced a good save out of Agustín Marchesín before the woodwork denied Carlos Darwin Quintero at the other end. Alejandro Díaz then tried his luck, but Sebastián Sosa was up to the task as the game remained goalless.
