A stoppage-time goal by Roberto Firmino gave Liverpool a 2-1 victory against Monterrey in the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup semifinals.
The UEFA champions were the heavy favorites going into this one – despite a number of absences due to injury and illness – but Monterrey made them work hard for their victory. While Liverpool had the majority of possession early, a makeshift back line let the Rayados through several times on the counter, albeit without an end product.
The 2019 FIFA Club World Cup continues this week with the semifinal round. Monterrey, the CONCACAF champion, reached the semifinal after beating the host nation’s representative, Al Sadd, in the quarterfinals; they’ll now take on UEFA champion Liverpool, who is entering the tournament in this round.
The Rayados have qualified for the Club World Cup three times previously, and reached the semifinal round just once, in 2012, where they fell 3-1 to Chelsea.
Liverpool has played in the Club World Cup just once before, back in 2005, where they reached the final but fell 1-0 to São Paulo.
