C16 Copa MX Review: Group 3 Game 6

Pachuca let a 3-1 lead escape as they drew 3-3 with Monterrey on Tuesday night, but they still took the bonus Llave point with their 5-4 aggregate victory. With the draw and the bonus point, Pachuca reaches 14 points and the quarterfinals, while Monterrey reaches nine points and is eliminated. C16 Copa MX Review: Group 4 Game 6

copa corona mxNecaxa 2-1 Mineros de Zacatecas
Necaxa came from behind to defeat Mineros de Zacatecas 2-1 on Tuesday night, which also gave them the bonus Llave point for their 4-3 aggregate victory. With the win and the bonus point, Necaxa reaches 15 points and the quarterfinals while Mineros remain on 11 and are eliminated.

Mineros took the lead in this one through Yamilson Rivero, whose shot from the edge of the box found the back of the net in the 41st minute. But Necaxa responded through Jorge Sánchez in the 64th minute, with his free kick hitting the woodwork and then rebounding in off the back of the keeper. Luis Gallegos gave the hosts the victory with his 90th-minute goal.

León 1-4 Monarcas Morelia
Monarcas Morelia earned their first win of the competition in their last game in it, downing León 1-4 and also taking the bonus Llave point for their 7-4 aggregate victory. With the win and the bonus point, Morelia reaches six points while León remains on six. Both teams are eliminated.

Miguel Sansores gave the visitors the lead in the 16th minute, before Juan Ezequiel Cuevas tied the game 1-1 through a penalty kick in the 19th minute. After that, the game was all Morelia, though, and the visitors retook the lead through Alejandro Gagliardi just before halftime. In the second half, Sansores added his second of the night in the 47th before Rodolfo Vilchis wrapped up the scoring in the 58th to give Morelia a comfortable 1-4 victory.

C16 Copa MX Review: Group 6 Game 6

copa corona mxVenados 2-1 Atlante
Venados defeated Atlante 2-1 on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough to take the bonus Llave point, which went to Atlante thanks to their 3-2 aggregate victory. With the victory, Venados reach 13 points while with the bonus point, Atlante reaches six. The result eliminates both teams, with Venados missing out on a spot in the quarterfinals only on goal difference.

The home team took the lead early, in the 13th minute. Julián Quiñones played in Luis Sánchez, whose cross was finished off by Sergio Rodríguez to make it 1-0. Atlante soon tied the game, however, with Luis Fernando Silva getting his head to a free kick to make it 1-1. In the second half, Venados regained the lead from the penalty spot. In the 66th minute, Jesús Palacios calmly slotted the PK home to make it 2-1 for the hosts.

Cafetaleros 1-2 Cruz Azul
Cruz Azul defeated Cafetaleros 1-2 on Wednesday and also took the bonus Llave point for their 7-3 aggregate victory. With the win and the bonus point, Cruz Azul reaches 16 points and the quarterfinals, while Cafetaleros remain on two points and are eliminated.

The visitors took the lead in the 30th minute, when Jorge Benítez received a through ball and sent a powerful shot towards goal; the ball struck a defender, but still maintained its trajectory into the back of the net. Cafetaleros then went down to 10 men with a red card to Carlos Utrilla in the 41st minute, but they still managed to find an equalizer just after halftime, with Julio Pardini making it 1-1 in the 46th. However, La Máquina responded immediately through Benítez, who scored his second of the night in the 49th minute.

Coras Tepic scored a stoppage-time goal to defeat Murciélagos 3-2, which also gave them the bonus Llave point for their 5-2 aggregate victory. With the win and the bonus point, Coras reach 16 points and the quarterfinals, while Murciélagos remain on three and are eliminated. It was the visitors who took the lead in this one, with debutant Michel López making it 0-1 in the 23rd minute. Although Mateus Goncalves tied the game for Coras in the 35th minute, Murciélagos retook the lead before halftime through Fernando Cortés. Continue reading

C16 Copa MX Llave 3 Second Legs: Where to Watch

copa corona mxThe third and final home-and-home series, or “Llave”, concludes this week in the Clausura 2016 Copa Corona MX. The winner of each group, as well as the two best overall second-place teams, will advance to the quarterfinals; a total of 14 teams are still mathematically in the running for a spot in the knockout rounds.
