Toluca 2-2 Mineros de Zacatecas
Both teams had the lead at one time or another, but in the end Toluca and Mineros de Zacatecas had to settle for a 2-2 draw in this Group 4 game. The visitors surprised Toluca by taking the lead in just the 6th minute, when Guillermo Martínez received the ball at the top of the box, cut inside, and made it 0-1 for Mineros. But the Diablos Rojos tied it up before halftime, with Ángel Reyna playing a free kick to Alexis Canelo, whose low shot went through the wall to make it 1-1 in the 31st minute.
Then, in the second half, Toluca took the lead through Luis Quiñones, who found the left-hand corner in the 59th minute. But the hosts relaxed after taking the lead, which allowed Mineros to score a late equalizer. In the 83rd minute, Miguel Velázquez played in Eder Cruz, whose first-time shot made it 2-2.
With the 2-2 draw, Toluca and Mineros both reach one point.
Necaxa 4-0 Mineros de Zacatecas (Group 9)
Necaxa remained unbeaten in the Copa MX with a comprehensive 4-0 win against Mineros de Zacatecas. The result leaves Mineros winless in the competition. The Rayos took an early lead and never looked back, with Martín Barragán finishing off a low cross from Daniel Álvarez in the third minute to make it 1-0. Then, in the 7th minute, Necaxa earned a penalty kick after Víctor Dávila was fouled in the box. Barragán took and converted the spot kick to make it 2-0.
Mineros tried to overcome the early deficit, but the chances did not go their way. The visitors had a golden opportunity to get back into the game with a penalty of their own, but Roberto Nurse saw his PK saved by Aarón Fernández. Then in the second half, Necaxa put the game completely out of reach. Dávila scored a volley to make it 3-0 and then Dieter Villalpando scored direct from a free kick to make it 4-0 in the 74th.
With the 4-0 win, Necaxa reaches seven points while Mineros still have zero.
Celaya 1-1 Pumas UNAM (Group 2)
Celaya took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Pumas UNAM. The result keeps Celaya winless while the universitarios took a point in their Copa debut. There were chances at both ends in the first half, with Ángel Reyna and Joffre Guerrón looking dangerous for their respective teams, but it wasn’t until the second half that the hosts found the breakthrough.
In the 65th minute, Celaya mounted a quick counterattack, with Reyna finding Pablo Ruíz, whose shot was blocked. But the rebound fell to Diego de la Tejera, who made it 1-0 for the Toros. They dropped back to defend their lead, but Pumas found the equalizer in the 77th minute. From a corner kick, José García sent the ball back across for Luis Quintana, whose bicycle kick made it 1-1.
With the 1-1 draw, Celaya and Pumas both reach one point.
Puebla 1-0 Atlante (Group 4)
Puebla beat Atlante 1-0 in the opening game of Group 4 thanks to a penalty kick late in the first half. The hosts started the game off well and could have opened the scoring in the very first minute when Gabriel Esparza found himself unmarked in the box with the ball, but he couldn’t put his shot on target.
Then, in the 41st minute, Gabriel España was called for a handball in the box. Carlos Salom stepped up to take the penalty kick and he converted it to give Puebla the 1-0 lead. The Poblanos had chances to add to their lead in the second half, but the final touch was lacking. Atlante did little to threaten a tying goal and in the end the PK was enough for Puebla.
With the 1-0 win, Puebla reaches three points while Atlante still has zero.
Toluca 3-1 Celaya (Group 8)
Toluca remained atop Group 8 with a 3-1 victory over Celaya. The result sees the Diablos Rojos advance to the round of sixteen while Celaya is eliminated. Toluca was assured of first in the group regardless of tonight’s result, and although they started the game off better it was the visitors who took the lead. In the 13th minute, Celaya won a penalty kick and Rodrigo López converted it to give the Toros the 0-1 lead. Toluca thought they had tied it just before halftime, but Alfredo Moreno’s would-be goal was disallowed after it was ruled that the ball had gone out of play in the buildup.
Nevertheless, Toluca rallied in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Rubens Sambueza scored direct from a free kick to make it 1-1; then, in the 72nd minute, the referee pointed to the penalty spot again, this time in favor of the hosts. Enrique Triverio converted the PK to make it 2-1, and then Fernando Uribe sealed the victory with his goal in the 87th minute.
With the 3-1 win, Toluca reaches 10 points while Celaya still has two.
Toluca 1-1 Veracruz (Group 8)
Veracruz took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Toluca scored late on to make it 1-1. The result keeps the Diablos Rojos unbeaten in the Copa MX and leaves the Tiburones Rojos winless. The hosts looked better in the early going, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring. In the 26th minute, Daniel Villalva got free and found Felipe Flores; the Chilean beat the goalkeeper to give Veracruz the 0-1 lead. Then, just before halftime, they had the opportunity to make it two after a 44th-minute foul gave them a penalty kick. However, Adrián Luna’s PK was stopped by Luis García to keep it 0-1.
In the second half, Toluca controlled the ball as they looked for a tying goal, but their final touch was lacking. Finally, in the 88th minute, Óscar Rojas sent in a low cross and debutant Andy García knocked it in to make it 1-1. Carlos Reinoso was then ejected from the sidelines in stoppage time to cap off a frustrating night for Veracruz.
With the 1-1 draw, Toluca reaches seven points while Veracruz still has two.
Atlas 1-1 Mineros de Zacatecas (Group 4)
Atlas is still winless in the Copa MX after tonight’s 1-1 draw with Mineros de Zacatecas in Group 4 play. However, the result did give them their first point of the competition and considering how the game started, they will be happy to take it. In the fifth minute, Mauro Laínes saw his shot hit the post, but it then rebounded against defender Cristian Calderón and in, giving Mineros the lead with an own-goal.
Atlas reacted well to that bit of misfortune, and they pressed forward in search of an equalizer. They found it in the 33rd minute, when Christian Tabó finished off a through ball to make it 1-1. In the second half, both teams looked for a winning goal, but Miguel Fraga and Carlos Velázquez were in good form in goal to prevent either side from scoring a second.
With the 1-1 draw, Atlas reaches one point while Mineros reach two.
Mineros de Zacatecas 1-1 Puebla – Group 4
Mineros de Zacatecas snatched a draw with Puebla after their late equalizer made it 1-1. The visitors had taken the lead just before halftime, after Eduardo Pérez sent in a good cross for Jerónimo Amione, who made it 0-1 in the 41st minute.
The first legs of the Apertura 2016 Ascenso MX quarterfinals saw two lower seeds earn victories. All four series, however, are separated by no more than a goal, leaving everyone still in it ahead of this weekend’s decisive second legs.
Alebrijes de Oaxaca 2-1 Celaya
The visitors took the lead in the 33rd minute through Abraham Isaí Riestra, whose header found the back of the net. But Alebrijes fought back in the second half with a 49th minute equalizer from Diego Martínez. Then, in the 69th minute, Lucero Álvarez scored from the penalty spot to give 8th-seeded Oaxaca the 2-1 victory.
