A17 Copa MX Week 4 Review: Wednesday’s Games

Necaxa 4-0 Mineros de Zacatecas (Group 9)
Necaxa remained unbeaten in the Copa MX with a comprehensive 4-0 win against Mineros de Zacatecas. The result leaves Mineros winless in the competition. The Rayos took an early lead and never looked back, with Martín Barragán finishing off a low cross from Daniel Álvarez in the third minute to make it 1-0. Then, in the 7th minute, Necaxa earned a penalty kick after Víctor Dávila was fouled in the box. Barragán took and converted the spot kick to make it 2-0.

Mineros tried to overcome the early deficit, but the chances did not go their way. The visitors had a golden opportunity to get back into the game with a penalty of their own, but Roberto Nurse saw his PK saved by Aarón Fernández. Then in the second half, Necaxa put the game completely out of reach. Dávila scored a volley to make it 3-0 and then Dieter Villalpando scored direct from a free kick to make it 4-0 in the 74th.

With the 4-0 win, Necaxa reaches seven points while Mineros still have zero.

A17 Copa MX Week 3 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Zacatepec 2-1 Tigres UANL (Group 5)
Zacatepec remained unbeaten in the Copa MX with a 2-1 victory against Tigres UANL. The result leaves the universitarios winless in Group 5. The visitors started the game off well with chances from Enner Valencia and Luis Cruz, but they couldn’t capitalize on them. Instead, the hosts took the lead in the 17th minute, when Armando González beat Enrique Palos from close range to make it 1-0.

Zacatepec added to their lead 10 minutes later after a penalty call in their favor. Luis Márquez converted the spot kick to make it 2-0. Tigres looked to respond in the second half, and they were able to reduce the deficit in the 78th minute. Damián Álvarez got free on the left, cut inside, and sent his shot past Víctor Hugo Hernández to make it 2-1. That goal set up a frenetic finale as Tigres pushed for an equalizer, but in the end Zacatepec held on to the lead.

With the 2-1 win, Zacatepec reaches four points while Tigres still have one.

A17 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Puebla 1-0 Atlante (Group 4)
Puebla beat Atlante 1-0 in the opening game of Group 4 thanks to a penalty kick late in the first half. The hosts started the game off well and could have opened the scoring in the very first minute when Gabriel Esparza found himself unmarked in the box with the ball, but he couldn’t put his shot on target.

Then, in the 41st minute, Gabriel España was called for a handball in the box. Carlos Salom stepped up to take the penalty kick and he converted it to give Puebla the 1-0 lead. The Poblanos had chances to add to their lead in the second half, but the final touch was lacking. Atlante did little to threaten a tying goal and in the end the PK was enough for Puebla.

With the 1-0 win, Puebla reaches three points while Atlante still has zero.

C17 Copa MX Week 6 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxVenados 1-1 Atlante (Group 6)
Venados earned their first point of the Copa MX in their final game of the tournament with a 1-1 draw with Atlante. The result leaves Atlante needing several other results to go their way in order to advance. The visitors looked the better side for long stretches of the game, but Venados defended valiantly and prevented the Potros from getting the win they needed.

Then, late in the second half, the hosts took the lead from the penalty spot. Fernando Herrera was called for a foul on Freddy Martín, and Leandro Navarro converted the spot kick to make it 1-0 in the 72nd minute. But Atlante quickly found a response, with Óscar Uscanga tying the game 1-1 in the 76th minute.

With the 1-1 draw, Venados reach one point while Atlante reaches five.

C17 Copa MX Week 5 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxAtlante 1-3 Chivas de Guadalajara (Group 6)
Atlante took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Chivas de Guadalajara came from behind to earn a 1-3 away win in this Group 6 match. The victory ensures Chivas will advance to the knockout rounds of the Copa MX. The opening goal came in the 24th minute through Fernando Espinosa, whose shot from the center of the box made it 1-0.

Chivas had to wait until the second half to find a goal of their own, with Carlos Fierro making it 1-1 in the 61st minute. A few minutes later, both teams were reduced to 10 men with the sending offs of Carlos Cauich and Hedgardo Marín. Ultimately it was Chivas who took advantage of the extra space on the field, with goals from Eduardo López in the 84th minute and Michelle Benítez in stoppage time to give them the 1-3 victory.

With the 1-3 win, Chivas reaches 10 points while Atlante still has four.

C17 Copa MX Week 3 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxMonterrey 5-0 Dorados de Sinaloa (Group 7)
Monterrey remained perfect in the Copa MX with a 5-0 dismantling of Dorados de Sinaloa in this Group 7 game. The loss keeps Dorados winless in the competition. The Rayados opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, when Efraín Juárez headed home a free kick from Dorlan Pabón to make it 1-0. Soon after that, Pabón provided another assist, this time to Edwin Cardona, as Monterrey took the 2-0 lead in the 29th minute. Just before halftime, Rogelio Funes Mori made it 3-0 to put the game out of reach for Dorados with 45 minutes left to play.

The hosts continued to dominate in the second half, and their continued pressure paid off as Funes Mori finished off his brace in the 71st minute to make it 4-0. Debutant Ángel López put the icing on the cake with his goal in the 82nd minute to give the Rayados a commanding 5-0 lead.

With the 5-0 win, Monterrey reaches six points while Dorados remain on zero.

Mineros de Zacatecas snatched a draw with Puebla after their late equalizer made it 1-1. The visitors had taken the lead just before halftime, after Eduardo Pérez sent in a good cross for Jerónimo Amione, who made it 0-1 in the 41st minute.

A16 Ascenso MX Quarterfinal First Leg Results

liga de ascensoThe first legs of the Apertura 2016 Ascenso MX quarterfinals saw two lower seeds earn victories. All four series, however, are separated by no more than a goal, leaving everyone still in it ahead of this weekend’s decisive second legs.

Alebrijes de Oaxaca 2-1 Celaya
The visitors took the lead in the 33rd minute through Abraham Isaí Riestra, whose header found the back of the net. But Alebrijes fought back in the second half with a 49th minute equalizer from Diego Martínez. Then, in the 69th minute, Lucero Álvarez scored from the penalty spot to give 8th-seeded Oaxaca the 2-1 victory.
