The Apertura 2017 Copa MX Round of Sixteen wrapped up this Wednesday with the remaining four games. Three of them were decided in regulation, while one went to penalties, as Santos Laguna, Pachuca, Monterrey, and Chivas de Guadalajara advanced to the quarterfinals.
Santos Laguna 2-0 Necaxa
Two late goals gave Santos Laguna a 2-0 victory against Necaxa. The first half was dominated by Santos, but they couldn’t make their chances count (although Carlos Izquierdoz came as close as hitting the crossbar).
The Apertura 2017 Copa MX knockout rounds got underway this Tuesday with the first four Round of Sixteen games. Three of them were decided by penalty shootouts as Tijuana, Atlante, América, and Querétaro moved on to the quarterfinals.
Monarcas Morelia 2-2 Tijuana (2-4 shootout)
Tijuana took a 2-0 lead before Morelia fought back to 2-2, but the Xolos ultimately triumphed in the penalty shootout. Damián Pérez put the Xolos ahead in the 26th minute when he brought the ball down with his chest and then sent a volley into the left corner.
Following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck central Mexico on Tuesday afternoon, Liga MX has postponed the Copa MX Round of Sixteen.
It was first announced that the América/Cruz Azul game would need to be rescheduled. Then Liga MX announced that the entire slate of matches, originally set to be played between Tuesday, September 19, and Thursday, September 21, would be rescheduled.
The new dates and times for the Round of Sixteen will be announced in the next few days.
Update: The games have been rescheduled for October 24-25.
Tijuana beat América by the minimum difference in the Copa MX round of sixteen.
The hosts took the initiative from the opening whistle and the Xolos dominated possession and chances. After spending much of the game in América’s defensive third, Tijuana found the breakthrough in the 28th minute.
Guido Rodríguez played in Paul Arriola, who sent his low shot past Agustín Marchesín to make it 1-0.
Cruz Azul beat 10-man León by the minimum difference in their Copa MX round of sixteen game.
Ángel Mena gave La Máquina the lead in the 13th minute after displaying some individual skill. Mena nutmegged Javier Cornejo, drove into the box, and sent his left-footed shot past the keeper to make it 1-0.
The game was largely even after the goal, but in the closing minutes of the half León’s hopes of a comeback were diminished following the ejection of Nacho González.
