C18 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Wednesday’s Games

Toluca 2-2 Mineros de Zacatecas
Both teams had the lead at one time or another, but in the end Toluca and Mineros de Zacatecas had to settle for a 2-2 draw in this Group 4 game. The visitors surprised Toluca by taking the lead in just the 6th minute, when Guillermo Martínez received the ball at the top of the box, cut inside, and made it 0-1 for Mineros. But the Diablos Rojos tied it up before halftime, with Ángel Reyna playing a free kick to Alexis Canelo, whose low shot went through the wall to make it 1-1 in the 31st minute.

Then, in the second half, Toluca took the lead through Luis Quiñones, who found the left-hand corner in the 59th minute. But the hosts relaxed after taking the lead, which allowed Mineros to score a late equalizer. In the 83rd minute, Miguel Velázquez played in Eder Cruz, whose first-time shot made it 2-2.

With the 2-2 draw, Toluca and Mineros both reach one point.

A17 Copa MX Week 4 Review: Wednesday’s Games

Necaxa 4-0 Mineros de Zacatecas (Group 9)
Necaxa remained unbeaten in the Copa MX with a comprehensive 4-0 win against Mineros de Zacatecas. The result leaves Mineros winless in the competition. The Rayos took an early lead and never looked back, with Martín Barragán finishing off a low cross from Daniel Álvarez in the third minute to make it 1-0. Then, in the 7th minute, Necaxa earned a penalty kick after Víctor Dávila was fouled in the box. Barragán took and converted the spot kick to make it 2-0.

Mineros tried to overcome the early deficit, but the chances did not go their way. The visitors had a golden opportunity to get back into the game with a penalty of their own, but Roberto Nurse saw his PK saved by Aarón Fernández. Then in the second half, Necaxa put the game completely out of reach. Dávila scored a volley to make it 3-0 and then Dieter Villalpando scored direct from a free kick to make it 4-0 in the 74th.

With the 4-0 win, Necaxa reaches seven points while Mineros still have zero.

A17 Copa MX Week 2 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Celaya 1-1 Pumas UNAM (Group 2)
Celaya took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Pumas UNAM. The result keeps Celaya winless while the universitarios took a point in their Copa debut. There were chances at both ends in the first half, with Ángel Reyna and Joffre Guerrón looking dangerous for their respective teams, but it wasn’t until the second half that the hosts found the breakthrough.

In the 65th minute, Celaya mounted a quick counterattack, with Reyna finding Pablo Ruíz, whose shot was blocked. But the rebound fell to Diego de la Tejera, who made it 1-0 for the Toros. They dropped back to defend their lead, but Pumas found the equalizer in the 77th minute. From a corner kick, José García sent the ball back across for Luis Quintana, whose bicycle kick made it 1-1.

With the 1-1 draw, Celaya and Pumas both reach one point.

A17 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Puebla 1-0 Atlante (Group 4)
Puebla beat Atlante 1-0 in the opening game of Group 4 thanks to a penalty kick late in the first half. The hosts started the game off well and could have opened the scoring in the very first minute when Gabriel Esparza found himself unmarked in the box with the ball, but he couldn’t put his shot on target.

Then, in the 41st minute, Gabriel España was called for a handball in the box. Carlos Salom stepped up to take the penalty kick and he converted it to give Puebla the 1-0 lead. The Poblanos had chances to add to their lead in the second half, but the final touch was lacking. Atlante did little to threaten a tying goal and in the end the PK was enough for Puebla.

With the 1-0 win, Puebla reaches three points while Atlante still has zero.

Lobos BUAP Promoted to Liga MX

After a 2-2 draw with Dorados de Sinaloa, which gave Lobos BUAP a 3-2 aggregate victory in the Final por el Ascenso promotion playoff, the licántropos have earned promotion to Liga MX for the first time in their history.

Dorados were looking to overturn their first-leg deficit, and it look them less than a minute to tie the aggregate. Moisés Velasco sent in a corner kick that Francisco Canales failed to deal with and the ball nestled into the back of the net. 1-0 on the night and 1-1 on aggregate.

Lobos BUAP vs Dorados de Sinaloa – Promotion Playoff First Leg Recap and Highlights

Lobos BUAP took the advantage in the 2017 Promotion Playoff with a 1-0 victory over Dorados de Sinaloa in Saturday’s first leg.

Lobos came out looking to make their home-field advantage count, and they started the game at a good pace with dangerous chances coming early on. They hit the post and then saw a header by Diego Jiménez go just wide as they pressed for the opening goal.

Ascenso MX 2017 Promotion Playoff Set

The winners of the Apertura 2016 and Clausura 2017 Ascenso MX campaigns will now face off in the Final por el Ascenso, the Promotion Playoff, for a spot in Liga MX.

Dorados de Sinaloa won the Apertura title with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Atlante, while Lobos BUAP took the Clausura title with a 4-2 aggregate victory of their own against FC Juárez.

C17 Copa MX Week 5 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxAtlante 1-3 Chivas de Guadalajara (Group 6)
Atlante took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Chivas de Guadalajara came from behind to earn a 1-3 away win in this Group 6 match. The victory ensures Chivas will advance to the knockout rounds of the Copa MX. The opening goal came in the 24th minute through Fernando Espinosa, whose shot from the center of the box made it 1-0.

Chivas had to wait until the second half to find a goal of their own, with Carlos Fierro making it 1-1 in the 61st minute. A few minutes later, both teams were reduced to 10 men with the sending offs of Carlos Cauich and Hedgardo Marín. Ultimately it was Chivas who took advantage of the extra space on the field, with goals from Eduardo López in the 84th minute and Michelle Benítez in stoppage time to give them the 1-3 victory.

With the 1-3 win, Chivas reaches 10 points while Atlante still has four.

C17 Copa MX Week 4 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxNecaxa 1-2 Jaguares de Chiapas (Group 5)
Necaxa took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they fell 1-2 to Jaguares de Chiapas. The result ends the Rayos’ unbeaten run in the competition, while also giving Jaguares their first victory. Necaxa started the game off well, and they took the lead in just the 8th minute. Fabián Espíndola finished off a loose ball after it rebounded against the woodwork to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.

Jaguares didn’t properly settle into the game until the second half, and even then it took a mistake by Necaxa to allow them to get on the board. Luis Miño recovered the ball at the top of the box and sent it past Yosgart Gutiérrez to make it 1-1 in the 67th minute. With the score level, the intensity of the game ratcheted up as both teams looked for a winner. Just as the game was looking destined to end 1-1, Enrique Esqueda completed the comeback for Jaguares with his 86th minute goal.

With the 1-2 win, Jaguares reach four points while Necaxa still has four.

C17 Copa MX Week 3 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxMonterrey 5-0 Dorados de Sinaloa (Group 7)
Monterrey remained perfect in the Copa MX with a 5-0 dismantling of Dorados de Sinaloa in this Group 7 game. The loss keeps Dorados winless in the competition. The Rayados opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, when Efraín Juárez headed home a free kick from Dorlan Pabón to make it 1-0. Soon after that, Pabón provided another assist, this time to Edwin Cardona, as Monterrey took the 2-0 lead in the 29th minute. Just before halftime, Rogelio Funes Mori made it 3-0 to put the game out of reach for Dorados with 45 minutes left to play.

The hosts continued to dominate in the second half, and their continued pressure paid off as Funes Mori finished off his brace in the 71st minute to make it 4-0. Debutant Ángel López put the icing on the cake with his goal in the 82nd minute to give the Rayados a commanding 5-0 lead.

With the 5-0 win, Monterrey reaches six points while Dorados remain on zero.
