Disciplinary Report: Clausura 2020 Week 4

Jorge Sánchez of América and Aldo Cruz of Tijuana were given one-game suspensions for serious foul play.

Pedro Aquino of León was given a one-game suspension for receiving two yellow cards in the same match.

Clausura 2020 Week 1: Rescheduled Matches – Where to Watch

Liga MX logoJornada 1 of the Clausura 2020 season featured an abbreviated slate of matches, with the season openers for the Apertura 2019 finalists – Monterrey and América – postponed.

That decision was made to allow the finalists a bit of rest before the new season, since – due to Monterrey’s participation in the FIFA Club World Cup – the second leg of the final was played just two weeks before the start of the Clausura.

That little bit of extra rest hasn’t seemed particularly helpful so far; with three games under their respective belts, Monterrey is winless and has earned just a single point, while América has a 1-1-1 record.

Clausura 2020 Week 4 Standings & Statistics

León moved into first place with their 1-2 win against Monarcas Morelia, which dropped the michoacanos into last place.

Pumas UNAM, Necaxa, Chivas de Guadalajara, and Atlético San Luis all remain unbeaten, while on the other side of things, Morelia and Monterrey remain winless.

In the Tabla de Cociente, Atlas remained in last despite their win.

Atlas vs Tijuana – Jornada 4 Recap & Highlights

Atlas logo "vs" Tijuana logoAtlas took, lost, and regained the lead as they beat 10-man Tijuana 2-1 in an empty Estadio Jalisco. The game was played behind closed doors as punishment for fans’ homophobic chanting in the Rojinegros’ last home game. The result snaps a two-game losing streak for Atlas, while the Xolos are now winless in three.

Atlas came out looking to get their season back on track in their first game under new coach Rafa Puente, who took over just yesterday. The breakthrough came in the 29th minute, when Luciano Acosta scored a golazo of a free kick to make it 1-0 for the hosts.

Atlético San Luis vs Chivas de Guadalajara – Jornada 4 Recap & Highlights

Atlético San Luis logo "vs" Chivas de Guadalajara logoChivas de Guadalajara took a two-goal lead but couldn’t hold it as Atlético San Luis scored in stoppage time to salvage a 2-2 draw. The result keeps both teams unbeaten this season although Chivas is also now winless in three.

The game seemed to start off well for the visitors, who earned an early penalty kick after Uriel Antuna was fouled in the box. Javier López stepped up to take the spot kick, and “Chofis” converted it to make it 0-1 for Chivas in the 14th minute.

Cufré Out, Puente In at Atlas

Following Atlas’s elimination in the Copa MX at the hand of Toluca, the club announced the departure of coach Leandro Cufré and his coaching staff.

Cufré, 41, leaves Atlas sitting in 14th place in the league table with one win and two losses in the Clausura 2020. He was in charge of the Rojinegros for 31 total games, with a record of 11 wins, 5 draws, and 15 losses in that span.

2019-2020 Copa MX Quarterfinals Set

The 2019-2020 Copa MX round of sixteen wrapped up this week, and eight teams have made it through to the quarterfinals.

Seven Liga MX teams and one from Ascenso MX advanced out of the round of the sixteen with the following aggregate results:

Toluca 3-3 Atlas; Toluca won 5-3 on penalties
Pachuca 4-2 Venados
Tijuana 2-0 Atlético San Luis
Dorados de Sinaloa 2-2 Chivas de Guadalajara; Dorados won 6-5 on penalties
Monarcas Morelia 4-4 Cafetaleros; Morelia won 3-2 on penalties
Santos Laguna 5-4 Pumas UNAM
Monterrey 7-3 Celaya

2019-2020 Copa MX Round of 16 – Second Legs: Where to Watch

Copa MX logoThe knockout rounds of the 2019-2020 Copa MX continue this week with the second legs of the round of sixteen.

The round of sixteen is a total goals, aggregate score series; away goals are not tiebreakers. Should the aggregate be tied at the end of the second leg, the winner will be determined by penalty kicks – no extra time will be played.
