Veracruz vs América – Jornada 18 Recap & Highlights

América locked up their spot in the playoffs in their final regular season game – they have a bye next week – with a 0-5 thumping of Veracruz. The result gives the Águilas three wins in their last four, while the Tiburones Rojos are winless in two.

The visitors were the better team from the beginning and it didn’t take long for their dominance to pay off. The usually assured Sebastián Jurado gifted them the opening goal in the 18th minute, when he came out to punch away a corner and missed the contact; the ball fell to Bruno Valdez, who put it away to make it 0-1.

Monarcas Morelia vs Puebla – Jornada 18 Recap & Highlights

Monarcas Morelia took a huge step toward clinching a playoff berth with a 3-2 victory against Puebla. The result keeps the Monarquía unbeaten in five, while the Poblanos are now winless in six.

The game started off perfectly for the hosts, who took the lead immediately following kickoff. Just 29 seconds into the game, Miguel Ángel Sansores finished off a low cross at the top of the six-yard box to make it 1-0 for Morelia with the fifth-fastest goal in league history.

2019-2020 Copa MX Round of Sixteen Set

The group stage of the 2019-2020 Copa MX wrapped up this week, which means the teams advancing to the knockout rounds have been set.

In the new Copa format, the knockout rounds begin with the Round of Sixteen and consist of two-game, total-goals series. The knockout rounds will begin in late January, since the Copa now runs only once a year: group stage in the Apertura and knockout rounds in the Clausura.

Disciplinary Report: Apertura 2019 Week 17

On the playing side, Pedro Álvarez of Atlético San Luis was given a one-game suspension for receiving two yellow cards in the same game, while Jown Anderson of León was suspended one game for serious foul play.

On the coaching side, Miguel Herrera of América was given a one-game suspension for deliberately leaving the technical area for the purpose of provoking or escalating a situation, while Jorge Almanda of Santos Laguna was suspended one game for deliberately leaving the technical area to disagree with or protest the decision of one of the referees.

Apertura 2019 Week 17 Standings & Statistics

Santos Laguna remained in first place with their 1-2 win against América, while Veracruz remained in last despite their 1-1 draw with Monterrey.

Santos Laguna has locked up a playoff spot, while FC Juárez, Toluca, Puebla, and Veracruz are all mathematically eliminated from contention.

In the relegation fight, Veracruz remained in last place in the Tabla de Cociente with their draw, while relegation rivals Querétaro also drew and San Luis, FC Juárez, and Chivas de Guadalajara all won.

Tigres UANL vs Toluca – Jornada 16 Recap & Highlights

Tigres UANL earned a victory by the minimum difference over 10-man Toluca on Wednesday night. The result keeps the universitarios unbeaten in five, while the Diablos Rojos saw their own five-game unbeaten streak halted.

There were chances at both ends from the beginning, but when Tigres thought they had found the breakthrough, André-Pierre Gignac’s would-be goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up. Toluca had opportunities as well, but Nahuel Guzmán made several good saves to keep them off the board, including an impressive one against Emmanuel Gigliotti in the 13th minute.
