Chivas de Guadalajara will close out their participation in the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup this Tuesday as they take on Espérance de Tunis in the fifth-place match.
Chivas fell 3-2 to Japan’s Kashima Antlers in the quarterfinal round, while Espérance was beaten 3-0 by the host nation’s representative, Al-Ain.
Espérance is looking to improve on their prior Club World Cup result, where they fell to Monterrey in the 5th-place match in 2011, while Chivas will look to finish their first Club World Cup tournament with a win here.
The Apertura 2018 Liga MX season concludes this Sunday as América and Cruz Azul contest the second leg of the Gran Final.
The two played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg on Thursday, which leaves this match as a winner-takes-all affair. Unlike in the prior rounds of the playoffs, away goals are not tiebreakers, nor is seeding. If aggregate remains level, the game will go to extra time and then penalties if needed.
The 2018 FIFA Club World Cup is underway in the United Arab Emirates, and CONCACAF’s representative, Mexico’s Chivas de Guadalajara, will begin their participation this Saturday.
Chivas will face Japan’s Kashima Antlers, the AFC champions, in the quarterfinal round. Regardless of the outcome, Chivas will have at least one more game in the tournament: either advancing to the semifinals to take on UEFA champion Real Madrid or facing the loser of the other quarterfinal, between Espérance de Tunis and Al Ain, in the fifth-place match.
This is Guadalajara’s first appearance in the Club World Cup, while Kashima Antlers are participating in the tournament for the second time after previously reaching the final in the 2016 edition, where they ultimately lost to Real Madrid in extra time.
The Apertura 2018 playoffs continue this Thursday with the first leg of the Gran Final between Cruz Azul and América.
The final is a two-legged, home-and-away series (although in this case both legs are being played at the Estadio Azteca, which Cruz Azul has been sharing with América this season) decided by aggregate score.
Unlike in the prior rounds of the playoffs, away goals are not tiebreakers, nor is seeding. If the second leg of the final finishes level on aggregate, the game will go to extra time and then penalties if needed.

The semifinals are a two-legged, aggregate goals series; away goals are tiebreakers. If both the aggregate and the away goals are level at the end of the second leg, the higher seed will advance.
