Veracruz vs Cruz Azul – Jornada 9 Recap & Highlights

Neither team could find the breakthrough in this one as Veracruz and Cruz Azul settled for a 0-0 draw. The result extends the Tiburones Rojos’ historic unbeaten streak to 34 games, but at least brings their six-game losing streak to a halt, while La Máquina remains unbeaten in two but winless in four.

Both teams were debuting coaches in this one, with Enrique López Zarza taking the helm at Veracruz and Robert Siboldi replacing Pedro Caixinha for Cruz Azul. The visitors looked the better team from the beginning and they attacked insistently in search of the breakthrough.

Monarcas Morelia beat Veracruz by the minimum difference to extend the Tiburones Rojos’ winless streak to 34 games. The result keeps the michoacanos unbeaten in three while Veracruz has now lost six in a row.

Veracruz, under the interim direction of José Luis González after the renunciation of Enrique Meza, came out attacking as they looked to snap their record-setting winless run, but Morelia quickly took control of the ball and the game. Enrique Meza Resigns as Veracruz Coach

After falling 5-0 to Querétaro on Tuesday, Enrique Meza has tendered his resignation as head coach of Veracruz.

The beleaguered club is in the midst of a 33-game winless run, with their last league victory coming more than a year ago (a 1-0 win against Tijuana on August 25, 2018). In the current Apertura 2019 season, they have just one point from six games and have lost their last five in a row.

Meza, who took over as coach in June, was unable to right the ship. In a press conference, he said he had done everything “humanly possible” to get the Tiburones Rojos back on track.

There were chances at both ends to start the game, but the visitors had the better of them. In the 7th minute, Sebastián Jurado made a good save on an acrobatic bicycle kick attempt to keep San Luis off the board.

Veracruz vs Pachuca – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Both teams had the lead at one time or another in this back-and-forth game, but in the end Veracruz and Pachuca had to settle for a 3-3 draw. The Tiburones Rojos will be heartened by the good play they showed in their Apertura debut (after having had a bye week in Jornada 1), while the Tuzos remain winless this season.

Pachuca was looking to avoid a second straight defeat, and they started this one off well. Franco Jara gave them the lead in the 8th minute as he drove into the area, cut around his defender, and sent his shot past the sprawling Sebastián Jurado to make it 0-1. That goal also tied Jara with Gabriel Caballero as Pachuca’s all-time leading goalscorer with 69.

Veracruz Suffers Six-Point Deduction for Unpaid Debts

Veracruz’s horrific Clausura 2019 season took another turn for the worse on Monday, when FIFA ordered a six-point deduction for the club. Veracruz has an outstanding debt of $224,550 to Uruguayan club Montevideo Wanderers for the rights to Matías Santos, who joined Veracruz in August 2017.

The young midfielder barely featured for the club, accumulating 180 minutes for the U-20 team and 90 minutes in the Copa MX; he was on the bench for two Liga MX games, but did not play. He left Veracruz for Deportivo Pasto July 2018.
