Clausura 2019 Week 6 Preview: Friday’s Games

Veracruz vs Tigres UANL – 8:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Veracruz (17th) drew 0-0 with Chivas de Guadalajara last weekend to end a three-game losing streak. The Tiburones Rojos are still winless in league play, though, and they also have yet to score a single goal. With relegation looking ever more inevitable, Veracruz needs to start winning ASAP if they want to make it a fight rather than a foregone conclusion. They’ll look to get on track when they return to the Estadio Luis Pirata Fuente for this one, but they have yet to earn a point at home this season.

As for Tigres UANL (3rd), the universitarios beat Santos Laguna last weekend to give them a two-game winning streak. Tigres are also unbeaten on the road this season, where they have two wins and a draw, and they’ll look to add to Veracruz’s home woes in this one. Tigres also has one of the best defensive records this season, with less than a goal per game allowed on average, which doesn’t bode well for Veracruz’s toothless attack. A win here would life Tigres into first place in the table – pending the rest of this weekend’s results – which will give them plenty of motivation.

Chivas de Guadalajara vs Veracruz – Jornada 5 Recap and Highlights

Chivas de Guadalajara closed out Jornada 5 in a rare Monday Liga MX game with a 0-0 draw against Veracruz. The result keeps El Rebaño unbeaten at home this season, but winless in two overall, while the Tiburones Rojos ended a three-game losing streak but remain winless in the Clausura.

Chivas came out attacking and they very nearly took the lead in the opening seconds, but Sebastián Jurado made a point-blank save to keep the hosts off the board. Then, in the 12th minute, Alexis Vega hit the underside of the crossbar as Chivas continued to come close.

Veracruz vs Puebla – Jornada 4 Recap and Highlights

Puebla missed a penalty kick but still did enough to earn a 0-1 win against 10-man Veracruz. The result gives the Poblanos their first victory of the Clausura 2019, while the Tiburones Rojos remain winless – and goalless – this season.

Veracruz came out attacking as they looked to end their scoreless streak, but Nicolás Vikonis was alert and made a pair of important interventions – including coming out of his box to head the ball away from danger – to keep the hosts off the board.

Clausura 2019 Week 4 Previews: Friday’s Games

Veracruz vs Puebla – 8:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Veracruz (17th) fell 2-0 to Monarcas Morelia last weekend to keep them winless this season. The Tiburones Rojos have lost two in a row and have yet to register a goal this season; their already-slim margin of error to avoid relegation is rapidly dwindling away and they need to start picking up points ASAP. They did manage to both score and win in the Copa MX in midweek, where they picked up a 2-0 victory against Lobos BUAP, and they’ll look to build on that result when they return to league play in this one.

As for Puebla (16th), the Poblanos drew 1-1 with Santos Laguna last weekend to keep them winless this season as well, although they remain unbeaten at home in league play. They fell 1-2 to FC Juárez in the Copa MX in midweek, though, but they’ll look to put that behind them when they visit a vulnerable-looking Veracruz here. Puebla has had some goal-scoring trouble this season – they’re averaging less than a goal a game – but if Veracruz’s own scoring woes continue, all Puebla would need would be one goal.

Monarcas Morelia vs Veracruz – Jornada 3 Recap and Highlights

Monarcas Morelia earned their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory against Veracruz. The result keeps the Tiburones Rojos winless this season – and leaves them still looking for their first goal.

Morelia came out looking for their first points of the season in front of their home fans, and they had an early opportunity through Edison Flores, who found himself one-on-one with Sebastián Jurado but couldn’t beat the keeper.

Monarcas Morelia vs Veracruz – 10:00 PM
Monarcas Morelia (16th) fell 1-0 to Santos Laguna last weekend to keep the michoacanos winless this season. They’ll look to rectify that when they return home to the Estadio Morelos for this one, but they had a distinctly mixed home record last season, going 3-2-3 and also managing just nine goals in those eight matches. But Morelia will be facing a vulnerable opponent in this one, and they’ll also have the advantage of not having played a midweek game. The pressure will be on for La Monarquia to get a win in this one.

As for Veracruz (14th), the Tiburones Rojos fell 0-1 to Lobos BUAP last weekend to keep them winless in the Clausura. That loss also dealt a serious blow to Veracruz’s hopes of avoiding relegation, and they’ll be desperate to start winning. To do that, they’ll also need to start scoring; the Tiburones have yet to manage a goal in league play. They failed to score in midweek as well, where they suffered a 2-0 loss to Mineros in the Copa MX.

Veracruz vs Lobos BUAP – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Lobos BUAP emerged triumphant in this match between relegation rivals as they earned a 0-1 away win against Veracruz. The result is a second straight win for the Licántropos and puts them atop the table, pending the rest of this weekend’s games, while the Tiburones Rojos remain winless and goalless in the Clausura 2019.

Veracruz needed all three points here, but they were unable to earn even one. The visitors had more chances, with Leonardo Ramos and Yago da Silva causing trouble for Veracruz’s defense. Michaell Chirinos had the clearest chance for the Lobos when he got past the keeper, but the defense kept him from getting clear shot and he had to send the ball over to Ramos, where the play was broken up.

Veracruz vs Lobos BUAP – 8:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Veracruz (10th) drew 0-0 with Pumas UNAM last weekend, and the Tiburones Rojos will look to build on that away point when they return home for this one. Veracruz is in serious danger of relegation, with only one team within realistic reach: their opponent tonight, Lobos BUAP. Taking three points from their relegation rival would be a huge step in Veracruz’s quest to remain in the first division, while a loss here could seriously harm their chances. The Tiburones Rojos will be concentrating on getting their first goal of the season here, as finding the net was something they struggled with in the Apertura.

As for Lobos BUAP (4th), the Licántropos got their Clausura underway with a 2-0 victory against Santos Laguna last weekend. They fell 0-1 to Mineros de Zacatecas in the Copa MX in midweek, though, although that starting XI had exactly zero players in common with their league starting XI, a sign of how important this match against Veracruz is in the relegation fight. Lobos struggled on the road in the Apertura, but they can’t afford to do so here, and Veracruz is a team that’s been vulnerable at home.

Pumas UNAM vs Veracruz – Jornada 1 Recap and Highlights

Neither team could find the breakthrough in this one as Pumas UNAM and Veracruz opened their Clausura 2019 seasons with a 0-0 draw.

The universitarios came out attacking and it looked like the hosts had taken the lead in just the 7th minute, when Felipe Mora finished off an attack. But after consulting VAR, referee Francisco Chacón disallowed the would-be goal for offside.

América vs Veracruz – Jornada 17 Recap and Highlights

América earned a comfortable 4-1 victory against 10-man Veracruz – despite missing a penalty – to confirm the Águilas’ second-place finish and keep the Tiburones Rojos in last place. The result ends a three-game winless streak for América, who are unbeaten in 11, while Veracruz wraps up the season with a 10-game winless streak.

This game was played at Toluca’s Estadio Nemesio Diez due to poor field conditions in the Estadio Azteca, but the change of venue didn’t appear to bother América at all as they took the lead in the very first minute of play. Cecilio Domínguez sent a cross in from the left for Roger Martínez, who finished it off at the top of the six-yard box to make it 1-0.
