Veracruz 1-2 León (Group 6)
León remained perfect in the Copa MX with a 1-2 away win against Veracruz. The result leaves the Tiburones Rojos still looking for their first points in the competition. A light rain and a wet field kept the game moving at a rapid pace, but it wasn’t until the half-hour mark that León took the lead. In the 31st minute, Andrés Andrade sent a cross in for Álvaro Ramos, whose header gave the visitors the 0-1 lead.
Veracruz responded on the stroke of halftime through Leandro Díaz, whose shot from the top of the box beat Édgar Hernández to make it 1-1. But La Fiera reclaimed the lead in the second half, with Andrade getting on the scoreboard himself in the 62nd minute, assissted by Maximiliano Cerato, to make it 1-2. Veracruz pushed for a second equalizer, and they came as close as hitting the post, but ultimately León held on to the lead.
With the 1-2 win, León reaches six points while Veracruz still has zero.
In an exciting game where both teams had the lead at one point or another, a late goal gave Puebla the 3-2 victory over Leones Negros.
The visiting Universidad de Guadalajara had the better of the early chances, with Ismael Valdez testing Israel Villaseñor, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring. In the 20th minute, Carlos Gutiérrez sent a cross into the box and Pedro Canelo headed it home to give Puebla the 1-0 lead.
However, Leones Negros soon tied it up through Valdez, who beat Villaseñor after some good interplay with Obed Estrada and Daniel Amador to make it 1-1 in the 29th minute.
The group stage of the Apertura 2016 Copa Corona MX has wrapped up, with sixteen teams advancing to the knockout rounds.
This reformatted cup competition saw the top two teams in each group advance to this round, when in previous years only eight teams advanced and the knockout stage started with the quarterfinals.
The eight group winners and eight runners-up were seeded based on the total points accumulated in the group stage and then paired up accordingly. Eleven teams from Liga MX and five from Ascenso MX will now square off for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Jaguares de Chiapas 2-2 Chivas de Guadalajara – Group 2
With advancement to the knockout rounds already assured for both clubs, Jaguares de Chiapas and Chivas de Guadalajara played out a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night.
Alonso Escoboza gave Jaguares the lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after Oswaldo Alanís was sanctioned for a foul. But Chivas tied it up through Carlos Salcido’s header in the 32nd minute before Alan Pulido converted a PK to put the visitors ahead just two minutes after that. Then, in the second half, Escoboza finished off his brace to level the match in the 72nd minute.
Puebla 1-1 Querétaro – Group 8
Puebla took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they drew 1-1 with Querétaro in Group 8 play. Nevertheless, the result is enough to guarantee both teams a spot in the knockout rounds. In the 21st minute, David Toledo hit the crossbar, but the rebound fell for Jerónimo Amione, who headed it home to make it 1-0 for Puebla. Querétaro nearly tied it through Camilo Sanvezzo in the 31st minute, but his shot went just wide.
Celaya vs Atlante – Group 1
Celaya and Atlante are both still looking for their first win in this competition after playing out a 1-1 draw in a game that finished 10 vs 10. Celaya started the game off better and they took the lead in just the sixth minute, when Ángel Reyna sent in a cross for Hugo López, who made no mistake with his finish. The hosts had a few chances to add to their lead but they were unable to capitalize on them.
Mineros de Zacatecas defeated superlíder Leones Negros 1-2 (2-3 aggregate) to advance to the Ascenso MX Clausura 2016 final, where they will face Necaxa.
A 1-1 draw in the first leg made today’s game a winner-takes-all affair. The visitors struck first, with Roberto Nurse giving Mineros the 0-1 lead in the 30th minute. It’s all to play for in the second leg after Mineros de Zacatecas and Leones Negros drew 1-1 on Thursday night. First-seeded Leones took the lead but couldn’t hold it, and they will now look to finish off the job at home on Sunday.
