C18 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Zacatepec 3-1 Murciélagos (Group 6)
Murciélagos took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Zacatepec came back for a 3-1 win in the opening match of the Clausura 2018 Copa MX. The visitors surprised Zacatepec by taking the lead in just the 8th minute when Rodolfo Galindo assisted Julián Cardozo to make it 0-1. Murciélagos had a golden opportunity to make it 0-2 just minutes later when they received a penalty after Francis Afriyie was fouled in the box. However, Luis Cárdenas saved the spot kick.

The PK save was a turning point as Zacatepec then gained the momentum. In the 15th minute, they tied it up through Juan Neira’s diving header. Despite having the majority of possession after that, it wasn’t until the second half that they took the lead. In the 66th minute, Armando González made it 2-1 for the hosts; then, in the 76th, Sefano Rodríguez added an insurance goal with his shot from distance to make it 3-1.

With the 3-1 win, Zacatepec reaches three points while Murciélagos still have zero.

C17 Copa MX Week 6 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxVenados 1-1 Atlante (Group 6)
Venados earned their first point of the Copa MX in their final game of the tournament with a 1-1 draw with Atlante. The result leaves Atlante needing several other results to go their way in order to advance. The visitors looked the better side for long stretches of the game, but Venados defended valiantly and prevented the Potros from getting the win they needed.

Then, late in the second half, the hosts took the lead from the penalty spot. Fernando Herrera was called for a foul on Freddy Martín, and Leandro Navarro converted the spot kick to make it 1-0 in the 72nd minute. But Atlante quickly found a response, with Óscar Uscanga tying the game 1-1 in the 76th minute.

With the 1-1 draw, Venados reach one point while Atlante reaches five.

C17 Copa MX Week 4 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxNecaxa 1-2 Jaguares de Chiapas (Group 5)
Necaxa took the lead but couldn’t hold it as they fell 1-2 to Jaguares de Chiapas. The result ends the Rayos’ unbeaten run in the competition, while also giving Jaguares their first victory. Necaxa started the game off well, and they took the lead in just the 8th minute. Fabián Espíndola finished off a loose ball after it rebounded against the woodwork to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.

Jaguares didn’t properly settle into the game until the second half, and even then it took a mistake by Necaxa to allow them to get on the board. Luis Miño recovered the ball at the top of the box and sent it past Yosgart Gutiérrez to make it 1-1 in the 67th minute. With the score level, the intensity of the game ratcheted up as both teams looked for a winner. Just as the game was looking destined to end 1-1, Enrique Esqueda completed the comeback for Jaguares with his 86th minute goal.

With the 1-2 win, Jaguares reach four points while Necaxa still has four.

C17 Copa MX Week 3 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxMonterrey 5-0 Dorados de Sinaloa (Group 7)
Monterrey remained perfect in the Copa MX with a 5-0 dismantling of Dorados de Sinaloa in this Group 7 game. The loss keeps Dorados winless in the competition. The Rayados opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, when Efraín Juárez headed home a free kick from Dorlan Pabón to make it 1-0. Soon after that, Pabón provided another assist, this time to Edwin Cardona, as Monterrey took the 2-0 lead in the 29th minute. Just before halftime, Rogelio Funes Mori made it 3-0 to put the game out of reach for Dorados with 45 minutes left to play.

The hosts continued to dominate in the second half, and their continued pressure paid off as Funes Mori finished off his brace in the 71st minute to make it 4-0. Debutant Ángel López put the icing on the cake with his goal in the 82nd minute to give the Rayados a commanding 5-0 lead.

With the 5-0 win, Monterrey reaches six points while Dorados remain on zero.

C17 Copa MX Week 1 Review: Wednesday’s Games

copa corona mxAtlante 2-0 Venados – Group 6
In this all-Ascenso MX match up, Atlante earned a 2-0 home victory over Venados in the Group 6 opener. It took a while for the teams to find a rhythm in this one, and the opening goal came from the penalty spot. In the 21st minute, Domingo Zalazar converted the spot kick to put Atlante ahead 1-0.

A16 Copa MX Week 6 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxAtlante 2-2 Celaya – Group 1
Atlante came from behind to draw Celaya 2-2 on Tuesday, which was enough to earn the Potros a spot in the knockout rounds. Celaya, despite going unbeaten through the group stage, was eliminated.

Celaya opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 11th minute through Ángel Reyna after Jimmy Bermúdez was sanctioned for a foul on Rafael Murguía. Celaya then made it 2-0 in the 37th minute with another PK, also for a foul committed by Bermúdez, also converted by Reyna.

A16 Copa MX Week 4 Review: Tuesday’s Games

copa corona mxQuerétaro 2-0 Dorados de Sinaloa – Group 8
Querétaro defeated Dorades de Sinaloa 2-0 on Tuesday night to move into first place in Group 8. The hosts took the lead in the 22nd minute. Édgar Benítez got free on the left, drove into the box, and shot past the onrushing keeper only for the ball to be cleared off the line by the defense. However, the rebound fell back to “Pájaro”, who sent the ball to Patricio Rubio for the finish.

A16 Copa MX Week 3 Review: Tuesday’s Games

Celaya and Atlante are both still looking for their first win in this competition after playing out a 1-1 draw in a game that finished 10 vs 10. Celaya started the game off better and they took the lead in just the sixth minute, when Ángel Reyna sent in a cross for Hugo López, who made no mistake with his finish. The hosts had a few chances to add to their lead but they were unable to capitalize on them.

A last-gasp goal gave León a 1-1 draw with Celaya in the opening match of Group 1. León came out attacking, looking for a victory in the Copa MX to make up for last weekend’s painful Liga loss. However, Celaya’s defense stood firm and dealt with chances by Hernán Darío Burbano and Elías Hernández without too much difficulty.

C16 Copa MX Review: Group 6 Game 6

Venados defeated Atlante 2-1 on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough to take the bonus Llave point, which went to Atlante thanks to their 3-2 aggregate victory. With the victory, Venados reach 13 points while with the bonus point, Atlante reaches six. The result eliminates both teams, with Venados missing out on a spot in the quarterfinals only on goal difference.

The home team took the lead early, in the 13th minute. Julián Quiñones played in Luis Sánchez, whose cross was finished off by Sergio Rodríguez to make it 1-0. Atlante soon tied the game, however, with Luis Fernando Silva getting his head to a free kick to make it 1-1. In the second half, Venados regained the lead from the penalty spot. In the 66th minute, Jesús Palacios calmly slotted the PK home to make it 2-1 for the hosts.

Cafetaleros 1-2 Cruz Azul
Cruz Azul defeated Cafetaleros 1-2 on Wednesday and also took the bonus Llave point for their 7-3 aggregate victory. With the win and the bonus point, Cruz Azul reaches 16 points and the quarterfinals, while Cafetaleros remain on two points and are eliminated.

The visitors took the lead in the 30th minute, when Jorge Benítez received a through ball and sent a powerful shot towards goal; the ball struck a defender, but still maintained its trajectory into the back of the net. Cafetaleros then went down to 10 men with a red card to Carlos Utrilla in the 41st minute, but they still managed to find an equalizer just after halftime, with Julio Pardini making it 1-1 in the 46th. However, La Máquina responded immediately through Benítez, who scored his second of the night in the 49th minute.
