Apertura 2019 Week 19 Standings & Statistics

The Apertura 2019 regular season has wrapped up with Santos Laguna remaining in first place after their 2-2 draw with Toluca, and Veracruz remaining in last after their 3-1 loss to Chivas.

Monarcas Morelia and Monterrey grabbed the final two playoff spots to join Necaxa, América, León, Tigres UANL, Querétaro, and Santos Laguna in the postseason.

In the relegation fight, Veracruz remained in last place in the Tabla de Cociente with their loss, while relegation rivals San Luis and FC Juárez also lost and Querétaro and Chivas de Guadalajara won.

FC Juárez vs Tigres UANL – Jornada 19 Recap & Highlights

Tigres UANL ensured the best possible seeding for the playoffs with a 1-2 victory against FC Juárez in the final regular season game of the Apertura 2019. The result sends the universitarios into the playoffs on the back of an eight-game unbeaten streak, while the Bravos saw their season end on a sour note with a home loss.

The game started off well for the visitors, who took the lead in just the 6th minute. Tigres worked the ball into the box and eventually to André-Pierre Gignac, who volleyed it home to make it 0-1 for the universitarios.

Toluca vs Santos Laguna – Jornada 19 Recap & Highlights

In a game where both teams had the lead at one time or another, Toluca and Santos Laguna ultimately had to settle for a 2-2 draw. With the Laguneros already having locked up first place in the table, and with the Diablos Rojos long since out of playoff contention, there wasn’t much for either side to play for in this one.

Nevertheless, the game started off at a good pace and the visitors soon took the lead. In the 9th minute, Santos won a free kick just outside the box, and Diego Valdés sent it curving past Alfredo Talavera to make it 0-1 for the Laguneros.

Pachuca vs Pumas UNAM – Jornada 19 Recap & Highlights

Pachuca earned a 2-0 victory against Pumas UNAM, but due to Monterrey’s victory earlier it was not enough to get the Tuzos into the playoffs. Pachuca ended their season with a three-game unbeaten streak, while the universitarios wrapped up their Apertura with a three-game winless streak.

Despite knowing they were out of the running for the Liguilla, Pachuca was determined to end the season on a positive note in front of their fans, and they came out attacking. Their pressure paid off in the 34th minute, when they took advantage of a defensive error to take the lead.

Chivas de Guadalajara vs Veracruz – Jornada 19 Recap & Highlights

Chivas de Guadalajara came from behind to earn a 3-1 victory against Veracruz. The result extends El Rebaño’s winning streak to three games, but also ends their season, while the Tiburones Rojos suffered a second straight defeat to finish the Apertura in last place in the table.

The game started with a minute of applause in honor of Jorge Vergara, the owner of Chivas who died last week; he was also honored with a video presentation at halftime. Additionally, Carlos Salcido was playing his final game against his former team and received an ovation from the crowd, who also displayed a number of banners in honor of the defender.

Cruz Azul vs Atlético San Luis – Jornada 19 Recap & Highlights

Cruz Azul wrapped up their season on a positive note with a 3-1 victory against Atlético San Luis. Both teams were eliminated from playoff contention before kickoff, but La Máquina managed to end their Apertura with a second straight home victory, while the Potosinos end their season with back-to-back losses.

The hosts opened the scoring early on, with Milton Caraglio heading home a long free kick from Elías Hernández in the 10th minute to give Cruz Azul the 1-0 lead.

Monterrey vs Atlas – Jornada 19 Recap & Highlights

Monterrey grabbed the last available playoff spot with a 2-0 victory against Atlas. The Rayados needed a win to guarantee their place in the postseason, and they got it, extending their unbeaten streak to five games in the process, while the Rojinegros saw their Apertura end with a four-game losing streak.

Monterrey came out attacking and their pressure soon paid off. In the 7th minute, Jesús Gallardo brought the ball to the end line before cutting it back to an unmarked Rogelio Funes Mori at the top of the box; his left-footed shot arced past the goalkeeper to give the Rayados the early 1-0 lead.

Querétaro vs Monarcas Morelia – Jornada 19 Recap & Highlights

Monarcas Morelia took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Querétaro came back for a 3-1 win. Both teams were already qualified for the playoffs going into this game, but the victory moves the Gallos Blancos a bit higher in the table.

Neither team was able to find the breakthrough in the first half, but it was just five minutes into the second when Miguel Ángel Sansores gave Morelia the lead. He received the ball at the top of the box and got off an acrobatic shot that Gil Alcalá initially appeared to have saved, only for the ball to squirm past him and over the line to make it 0-1 for the visitors.

Tijuana vs León – Jornada 19 Recap & Highlights

In a game that finished 10 vs 10 and went past the 100th minute, León emerged victorious with a 1-2 away win against Tijuana. The loss eliminates the Xolos from playoff contention, while La Fiera – already qualified for the Liguilla – locked up the second seed.

All the pressure was on the hosts for this one; Tijuana needed a draw to keep any sort of hope alive, and even with a win their fate wouldn’t be entirely in their own hands. But despite that, it was the visitors who took the lead.

Puebla vs Necaxa – Jornada 19 Recap & Highlights

Puebla closed out their season on a high with a 3-0 victory against Necaxa. The Poblanos snapped a six-game winless streak with that result, while the Rayos have now lost two of their last three.

Puebla was already eliminated from playoff contention going into this one, while Necaxa had their own spot in the Liguilla locked up, but it was the hosts who came out looking stronger. In the 11th minute, Christian Marrugo played the ball to Christian Tabó at the top of the box, and the Uruguayan beat Hugo González to make it 1-0 for La Franja.  Continue reading
