Atlas vs América – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

América started their season as reigning champions with a 1-2 away win against Atlas. The result gets the Águilas’ Clausura 2019 off to a positive start, while the Rojinegros suffered their first loss of the young season.

The game was intense from the opening whistle, with América attacking and Atlas struggling to contain them. The hosts picked up a pair of early yellow cards for fouls that broke up América attacks, but Atlas also managed a a few chances of their own, with Andrés Santamaría having the most notable one with a shot that went just wide.

Veracruz vs Lobos BUAP – Jornada 2 Recap and Highlights

Lobos BUAP emerged triumphant in this match between relegation rivals as they earned a 0-1 away win against Veracruz. The result is a second straight win for the Licántropos and puts them atop the table, pending the rest of this weekend’s games, while the Tiburones Rojos remain winless and goalless in the Clausura 2019.

Veracruz needed all three points here, but they were unable to earn even one. The visitors had more chances, with Leonardo Ramos and Yago da Silva causing trouble for Veracruz’s defense. Michaell Chirinos had the clearest chance for the Lobos when he got past the keeper, but the defense kept him from getting clear shot and he had to send the ball over to Ramos, where the play was broken up.

Clausura 2019 Week 2 Preview: Sunday’s Games

Toluca vs Puebla – 1:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Toluca (2nd) came from behind to earn a 1-3 victory against Monarcas Morelia last weekend, and they’ll be looking to make it two wins in a row when they return home to the Estadio Nemesio Diez for this one. The Diablos Rojos will be encouraged by their response to falling behind last weekend and they’ll also have the advantage of some extra rest for this one as they did not have a midweek game.

As for Puebla (9th), the Poblanos drew 1-1 with Cruz Azul last weekend. They’ll now look for their first win when they go on the road in this one. Puebla was on the road in midweek as well, where they fell 3-2 to TM Fútbol Club in the Copa MX. They’ll look to put that behind them here, but Toluca is a hard team to beat at home. Nevertheless, Puebla will want to get that first win under their belt sooner rather than later. Although they’re not realistically involved in the relegation fight this season, despite their penultimate position in the Tabla de Cociente, they’ll want to strengthen their position for next year by earning as many points as possible this season.

Clausura 2019 Week 2 Preview: Saturday’s Games

Monterrey vs León – Fox Deportes
Monterrey (1st) started their season in style with a 5-0 thumping of Pachuca last weekend. The Rayados will now look to make it two home wins in a row as they aim to remain atop the standings. Monterrey is traditionally hard to beat at home, where they fell just once in the Apertura; with six wins and a draw rounded out their home record. They’ll be looking for similar dominance this season, and they’ll be full of confidence after last weekend’s goal-fest.

As for León (7th), La Fiera gave up a stoppage-time penalty to draw 2-2 with Tigres UANL last weekend. They failed to win in midweek as well, where they fell 0-1 to Alebrijes de Oaxaca in the Copa MX, and they’ll now be looking for their first win in all competitions. Getting that win in the Estadio BBVA Bancomer won’t be an easy feat, but León earned the majority of their points on the road last season and they’ll look to remain a dangerous visiting team in the Clausura.

Clausura 2019 Week 2 Preview: Friday’s Games

Veracruz vs Lobos BUAP – 8:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Veracruz (10th) drew 0-0 with Pumas UNAM last weekend, and the Tiburones Rojos will look to build on that away point when they return home for this one. Veracruz is in serious danger of relegation, with only one team within realistic reach: their opponent tonight, Lobos BUAP. Taking three points from their relegation rival would be a huge step in Veracruz’s quest to remain in the first division, while a loss here could seriously harm their chances. The Tiburones Rojos will be concentrating on getting their first goal of the season here, as finding the net was something they struggled with in the Apertura.

As for Lobos BUAP (4th), the Licántropos got their Clausura underway with a 2-0 victory against Santos Laguna last weekend. They fell 0-1 to Mineros de Zacatecas in the Copa MX in midweek, though, although that starting XI had exactly zero players in common with their league starting XI, a sign of how important this match against Veracruz is in the relegation fight. Lobos struggled on the road in the Apertura, but they can’t afford to do so here, and Veracruz is a team that’s been vulnerable at home.
