Santos Laguna 2-1 Toluca
Santos Laguna remained perfect in the Clausura 2018 Copa MX with a 2-1 victory against Toluca in this Group 4 game. The result leaves the Diablos Rojos winless in this competition. Santos opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark when Brian Lozano scored direct from a free kick to make it 1-0.
In the second half, Toluca found the equalizer. In the 66th minute, Fernando Uribe’s initial shot was saved but the rebound fell to Rodrigo Salinas, who made it 1-1. However, Santos soon retook the lead. In the 70th minute, Lozano hit the post, with the rebound then falling to Julio César Furch, who made it 2-1. Although Santos then went down to 10 men after Jorge Sánchez was red-cared, Toluca couldn’t take advantage as just minutes later they saw Pablo Barrientos sent off.
With the 2-1 win, Santos reaches six points while Toluca still has one.
Venados 1-2 Cafetaleros
Cafetaleros remained top of Group 1 with their 1-2 away win against Venados. The result leaves the hosts winless and pointless in this competition. Cafetaleros looked dangerous throughout, but Venados’ debutant goalkeeper, Andrés Gudiño, made several good saves to keep the game goalless going into halftime.
But just one minute after the restart, Cafetaleros took the lead. Yoel Bárcenas finished off a cross to make it 0-1. In the 58th minute, they made it 0-1 as Bárcenas assisted Leonardo Ramos to put the visitors comfortably ahead. Venados pulled a goal back late after Luciano Nequecaur converted an 80th-minute penalty kick, but they were unable to go on to tie the game.
With the 1-2 win, Cafetaleros reach six points while Venados still have zero.
Pumas UNAM remained in first place in the table after their 0-0 draw with América in the Clásico Capitalino, while Lobos BUAP remained in last with their 3-1 loss to Pachuca.
There are no perfect teams remaining after Pumas and León both drew, but they, along with Cruz Azul, Monterrey, América, and Tijuana, remain unbeaten. Atlas and Lobos are the only teams not to record a point, while Necaxa and Veracruz are also still looking for their first win.
Veracruz remained last in the relegation standings with their 2-0 loss to relegation rival Puebla, while fellow rivals Lobos and Atlas also lost and Querétaro drew.
It was honors even in the Clausura 2018 edition of the Clásico Capitalino as Pumas UNAM and América played out a 0-0 draw. The result keeps the universitarios at the top of the table, although it also ends their perfect start to the season, while the Águilas are likewise still unbeaten.
There were chances at both ends, and América had a dangerous one in the 13th minute. Mateus Uribe played the ball in for Cecilio Domínguez, but Alfredo Saldívar made the save. Then in the 21st minute, Jesús Gallardo tried his luck from distance for the hosts, but his shot was just off target.
Avilés Hurtado missed a penalty as Monterrey had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Tijuana. The result keeps both teams unbeaten in the Clausura 2018, although the Rayados remain winless at home this season.
Monterrey came out attacking and had their first good chance in just the 2nd minute, when John Stefan Medina tried his luck from outside the box and forced a good save out of Gibrán Lajud. Moments later, Avilés Hurtado had a chance of his own, but once again the keeper intervened.
Pachuca earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory against Lobos BUAP. The result keeps the Tuzos unbeaten in two while the Licántropos are still looking for their first win – and their first point – of the season.
Pachuca came out attacking as they looked to put their home-field advantage to good use. Franco Jara tested Lucero Álvarez early on before the opening goal came in just the 9th minute. From a corner kick, Ángelo Sagal got the final touch to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
