Clausura 2019 Copa MX: Week 5 Standings & Statistics

The Clausura 2019 edition of the Copa MX continued this week with the fifth round of group-stage games.

The home teams had the edge this week, with four victories to the away teams’ two, and the final two games ending in draws. Four Liga MX teams picked up victories, while two Ascenso MX teams did the same.

Disciplinary Report: Clausura 2019 Week 5

The Disciplinary Committee has suspended five players and fined a coach in the aftermath of this weekend’s Jornada 5 games.

Lucas Cavallini of Puebla and Omar Tobio of Toluca were both given one-game suspensions for violent conduct, while Matheus Doria of Santos Laguna was suspended one game for serious foul play.

Cruz Azul and Pumas UNAM had filed petitions of non-conformity regarding the red cards given to Yoshimar Yotún and Luis Quintana, respectively, but neither petition proceeded and both players were given one-game suspensions for denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Clausura 2019 Copa MX Week 5: Where to Watch

The Clausura 2019 Copa MX tournament continues this week with the fourth round of group-stage games.

The group stage consists of six rounds of games, with each team playing four matches. The winner of each group, along with the seven best runners-up, will then advance to the knockout rounds.

Clausura 2019 Week 5 Standings & Statistics

Monterrey remained in first place with their 1-1 draw with Pumas UNAM, while Querétaro remained last after their 2-0 loss to América.

Monterrey and Necaxa both remain unbeaten, while Pumas, Veracruz, and Querétaro remain winless, with Querétaro the only team yet to record a point.

In the relegation standings, Veracruz remained in last place in the Tabla de Cociente with their draw while relegation rival Lobos BUAP also drew.

Chivas de Guadalajara vs Veracruz – Jornada 5 Recap and Highlights

Chivas de Guadalajara closed out Jornada 5 in a rare Monday Liga MX game with a 0-0 draw against Veracruz. The result keeps El Rebaño unbeaten at home this season, but winless in two overall, while the Tiburones Rojos ended a three-game losing streak but remain winless in the Clausura.

Chivas came out attacking and they very nearly took the lead in the opening seconds, but Sebastián Jurado made a point-blank save to keep the hosts off the board. Then, in the 12th minute, Alexis Vega hit the underside of the crossbar as Chivas continued to come close.

Lobos BUAP vs Pachuca – Jornada 5 Recap and Highlights

Lobos BUAP took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Pachuca came back for a 1-1 draw. The result ends the Licántropos’ two-game losing streak but keeps them winless in three, while the Tuzos are now unbeaten in two.

Lobos came out attacking as they looked to make their home field advantage count. In the 8th minute, Michaell Chirinos sent a low shot towards goal that Alfonso Blanco stopped, giving up a rebound that fell to Leonardo Ramos – who couldn’t get his shot on target.

Pumas UNAM vs Monterrey – Jornada 5 Recap and Highlights

Monterrey took the lead but couldn’t hold it as 10-man Pumas UNAM fought back for a 1-1 draw. The result keeps the Rayados unbeaten in the Clausura, while the universitarios remain winless – although they are unbeaten at home.

Pumas, under the direction of new coach Bruno Marioni, were looking to get their first victory of the season, and they started the game off well, controlling possession and creating a few chances. But the afternoon took a turn for the worse for the hosts in the 25th minute, when Luis Quintana was sent off for a foul on Rogelio Funes Mori just outside the box.

Tijuana vs Toluca – Jornada 5 Recap and Highlights

Tijuana earned their first home victory of the season with a 2-0 win against Toluca. The result gives the Xolos two wins in their last three games while the Diablos Rojos have now lost three in a row.

Tijuana had struggled to score this season, with just one goal in their previous four games, but they came out attacking and looked dangerous in this one. Within the first five minutes, they had had two good chances through Gustavou Bou and Ariel Nahuelpán that forced Alfredo Talavera into action.

Tigres UANL vs Santos Laguna – Jornada 5 Recap and Highlights

Tigres UANL earned their first home win of the season with a 2-1 victory against 10-man Santos Laguna. The result gives the universitarios two wins in a row overall, while the Laguneros saw their three-game unbeaten streak halted as they remain winless on the road.

The game started off at a good pace, with early chances at either end. André-Pierre Gignac had the first opportunity for Tigres when he got in behind the defense, but Matheus Doria was there to block his shot. Santos, likewise, was stymied by the defense although they had a pair of chances of their own in the first 10 minutes.

León vs Cruz Azul – Jornada 5 Recap and Highlights

León earned their first home win of the season with a 2-0 victory against 10-man Cruz Azul. The result gives La Fiera a two-game winning streak, while La Máquina saw their own two-game winning streak halted.

León started the game off well, and Ángel Mena in particular was dangerous for the hosts. In the 18th minute, Mena gave León the lead from the penalty spot. Yoshimar Yotún was called for a foul in the box, which – after VAR review – ended with a red card for Yotún and a penalty for León.
