Monterrey started the game off strongly against a Lobos side that has been struggling in recent weeks. Toño Rodríguez was impressive in goal for the visitors, but he could only do so much against the league’s best attack; in the 20th minute, the Rayados opened the scoring.
Atlas took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Puebla came back for a 1-2 victory. The result snaps the Rojinegros’ two-game winning streak and three-game unbeaten streak, while the Poblanos have now won two in a row on the road.
Atlas started the game off stronger and had several early chances. Then, in the 15th minute, they took the lead. Jesús Isijara received a corner kick unmarked at the top of the six-yard box, took a touch, and sent his shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
A pair of late goals gave Tigres UANL a 0-2 away win against Veracruz. The result keeps the Tiburones Rojos winless and goalless in the Clausura, while the universitarios extended their winning streak to three games and remained unbeaten on the road.
Tigres had the edge, with André-Pierre Gignac repeatedly testing goalkeeper Sebastián Jurado, who made a number of impressive saves to keep Veracruz in the game. The Sharks’ attack continued to be toothless, with neither Cristian Menéndez nor Colin Kazim-Richards able to do much to trouble Nahuel Guzmán.
Toluca vs Cruz Azul – 1:00 PM – Univision / Univision Deportes
Toluca (12th) fell 2-0 to Tijuana last weekend to extend their losing streak to three games. The Diablos rojos will look to get back to winning ways when they return to the Estadio Nemesio Diez for this one, but they’ve had mixed results at home so far in the Clausura. They’ve also failed to score in their last three matches, bringing their scoreless streak to 280 minutes. They have a fairly good defensive record, though, and they’ll also have the advantage of some extra rest for this one as they did not have a midweek game.
As for Cruz Azul (10th), La Máquina fell 2-0 to León last weekend to end their two-game winning streak. That was the first time this season Cruz Azul conceded more than one goal in a game, although on the other hand they’ve also failed to score more than one goal in a game. That pattern continued in the Copa MX in midweek, where they played out a 1-1 draw with León. They’ll look to get back on track when they face a new opponent in this one.
Querétaro vs Pumas UNAM – 6:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Querétaro (18th) fell 2-0 to América last weekend to keep them winless and pointless this season. The Gallos Blancos have suffered through five straight losses and have the worst defensive record in the league with 11 goals allowed. They failed to win in midweek as well, where they suffered a 2-3 loss to Zacatepec in the Copa MX, which will not help their confidence at all going into this one.
As for Pumas UNAM (16th), the universitarios drew 1-1 with Monterrey last weekend to keep them winless this season as well – although they also remained unbeaten at home. Pumas did look improved under the direction of new coach Bruno Marioni, though, and they’ll now look for their first win of the season against the league’s basement dwellers. Pumas will also have the advantage of some extra rest as they did not play a midweek game.
Veracruz vs Tigres UANL – 8:00 PM – Univision Deportes
Veracruz (17th) drew 0-0 with Chivas de Guadalajara last weekend to end a three-game losing streak. The Tiburones Rojos are still winless in league play, though, and they also have yet to score a single goal. With relegation looking ever more inevitable, Veracruz needs to start winning ASAP if they want to make it a fight rather than a foregone conclusion. They’ll look to get on track when they return to the Estadio Luis Pirata Fuente for this one, but they have yet to earn a point at home this season.
As for Tigres UANL (3rd), the universitarios beat Santos Laguna last weekend to give them a two-game winning streak. Tigres are also unbeaten on the road this season, where they have two wins and a draw, and they’ll look to add to Veracruz’s home woes in this one. Tigres also has one of the best defensive records this season, with less than a goal per game allowed on average, which doesn’t bode well for Veracruz’s toothless attack. A win here would life Tigres into first place in the table – pending the rest of this weekend’s results – which will give them plenty of motivation.
