Disciplinary Report: Apertura 2018 Week 9

The Disciplinary Committee has suspended four players and upheld one red card appeal and overturned another in the aftermath of this weekend’s Jornada 9 games.

Atlas filed a petition of nonconformity regarding the red card given to Lorenzo Reyes, which was upheld, clearing Reyes to play in the Rojinegros’ next game. Veracruz’s petition, regarding the card given to Luiz Caicedo, was overturned, and he will be suspended for the Tiburones Rojos’ next match.

Apertura 2018 Week 9 Standings & Statistics

Cruz Azul remained in first place despite their 2-0 loss to Necaxa, while Atlas remained in last with their 0-1 loss to Tijuana.

There are no unbeaten teams left after Cruz Azul’s loss, while Atlas remains the only winless one.

In the relegation standings, Lobos BUAP remained last with their 4-2 loss to Pumas UNAM, while relegation rivals Veracruz and Querétaro also lost and Puebla won.

Pumas UNAM vs Lobos BUAP – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

Pumas UNAM moved into second place with a comprehensive 4-2 victory against Lobos BUAP. The result is a second straight win for the universitarios, who are unbeaten in three, while the Licántropos have now lost five in a row and are winless in seven.

The game started off perfectly for the hosts, who took the lead in just the 6th minute. José Esquivel tried to cut out a cross, but the defender only managed to redirect the ball into the path of Alan Mendoza, who made it 1-0.

Monterrey vs Chivas de Guadalajara – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

Chivas de Guadalajara took, lost, and regained the lead as they earned an impressive 2-4 away win against Monterrey. The result give El Rebaño four wins in their last five, while the Rayados have now lost two in a row and are winless in three.

Rodolfo Pizarro, facing his former team, looked dangerous for Monterrey early on as he combined well with Dorlan Pabón to threaten Guadalajara’s goal, but Jair Pereira made a good tackle to cut the opportunity short.

Necaxa vs Cruz Azul – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

Necaxa ended Cruz Azul’s unbeaten Apertura with a 2-0 victory on Saturday night. The result snaps a five-game winless streak for the Rayos – and keeps them unbeaten at home – while La Máquina suffered their first defeat of the season.

The hosts came out attacking as they looked to break down Cruz Azul’s league-leading defense. Their pressure paid off in the 21st minute, when Necaxa won a free kick just outside the box. Matías Fernández sent the free kick low under the wall to give the Rayos the 1-0 lead.

América vs Monarcas Morelia – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

América beat Monarcas Morelia 2-1 in a game that saw the visitors finish with just nine men after two stoppage-time red cards. The result is a second straight win for the Águilas, who remain unbeaten at home this season, while the michoacanos have now lost back-to-back games and are winless in four.

América came out attacking and the hosts had the first good chance of the game through Henry Martín in the very first minute, but his attempt ended up just wide. The hosts had the majority of the chances with another good opportunity coming through Emanuel Aguilera in the 17th minute.

Pachuca vs Tigres UANL – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

Pachuca took the lead but couldn’t hold it as Tigres UANL came back for a 1-1 draw. The result ends the Tuzos’ two-game winning streak but keeps them unbeaten in six, while the universitarios remain winless on the road but unbeaten in four overall.

The two teams traded chances in the first half, with Franco Jara coming close from a header in the 14th minute before André-Pierre Gignac had a pair of opportunities go wide at the other end. Then, in the 30th minute, the hosts took the lead.

Querétaro vs Puebla – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

Querétaro suffered their first home loss of the season as they fell 0-1 to Puebla. The result is a second straight win for the Poblanos – and their first on the road in the Apertura – while the Gallos Blancos saw their three-game winning streak halted.

The game started off slowly, with the ball remaining largely in midfield. Dangerous chances took some time to appear, with the earliest opportunity an off-target shot by Camilo Sanvezzo following a pass from Marcel Ruíz.

Veracruz vs Toluca – Jornada 9 Recap and Highlights

Veracruz erased a two-goal deficit only to concede a late penalty as they fell 2-3 to Toluca. The result gives the Diablos Rojos back-to-back wins while the Tiburones Rojos have now lost two in a row.

The visitors quickly took control of the game, and in the 13th minute they took the lead. Rubens Sambueza played in Luis Quiñones, whose low shot to the far post beat Pedro Gallese to make it 0-1 for Toluca.
